Quentin Tarantino :: The Allen Agency :: Keynote Speakers, Celebrity Speakers, Guest Speakers, Motivational Speaker
This is mainly due to the heavy cutting of the first two segments and the introduction which make much of the plotline unintelligible, and creates a complete mess out of the second segment, directed by Alexandre Rockwell.
That film was released on December 25th in the United States to very weak reviews.
The best two segments of the film are Robert Rodriguez's and Tarantino's.

Alexandre Rockwell has had an uncanny penchant for making the most of the small, quiet moments that other filmmakers might gloss over in favor of meatier drama.
A native of Massachusetts and the grandson of animators Alexandre Alexeieff and Claire Parker, Rockwell spent most of his teenage years making short films in the suburbs of Boston.

 In the Soup (1992)
Winner of the Grand Jury Dramatic Prize at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival, Alexandre Rockwell's In the Soup is a whimsically funny deadpan comedy that's never quite gotten its due.
And unlike his fellow 1992 Sundance alumnus Quentin Tarantino (Reservoir Dogs premiered at the festival that year), writer/director Alexandre Rockwell hasn't enjoyed much success, either critically or commercially, over the last 12 years.
Aside from directing one of the segments in the misbegotten anthology film Four Rooms (1995), Rockwell has made two films, both of which received negligible distribution.

 VH1.com : Movies : Person : Jennifer Beals : Biography
Beals was married to director Alexandre Rockwell in 1986, and in 1992 she would appear opposite Steve Buscemi and Seymour Cassel in Rockwell's comedy drama In the Soup.
Beals' only other film work to that point was as an extra in 1980's My Bodyguard, so it was quite a gamble to cast a virtual unknown in the lead.
When it was later revealed that Beals impressive moves weren't entirely her own, audiences felt betrayed (as if action stars really do all of their own stunts) and subsequently protested the burgeoning actress without taking into consideration that she was the dramatic core of the film.

 Jennifer Beals: It's Showtime!
Beals married French filmmaker Alexandre Rockwell in 1986; the union lasted 10 years, and Beals appeared in Rockwell-directed films Sons (as a transvestite) and 1992's In the Soup, a critically acclaimed independent film released amid the height of the American indie era.
In 1998, Beals wed again and became a stepmom of two, but she won't discuss her family, except to say her husband is not involved in show business and they live in a rural community 300 miles from Los Angeles with two large, playful mutts.
In fact, Beals was only 19 when she wowed the world with her portrayal of willowy welder Alex Owens and has worked steadily since then averaging about one film or TV project a year.

Amazon.co.uk: DVD: In The Soup [1992]
Alexandre Rockwell's tale of the beleaguered auteur may have a touch of the autobiographical, but it also has something of the fantastic about it.
Shot in grainy black and white on a shoestring it stars the fabulous Steve Buscemi with support from the always great Seymour Cassel and Jennifer Beals (at the time married to Rockwell).
Cassel is the shady businessman and all round fun guy who takes the uber-serious Buscemi under his wing, and Beals is the angelic neighbour who he wants to propel to stardom - not that she cares.

 13 Moons
13 Moons is another dud from indie director Alexandre Rockwell (he was the one director in Four Rooms who you'd never even heard of; his 1992 film In the Soup remains his sole worthwhile credit).
I dredge up all this backstory about Rockwell because I have so little to say about his latest movie.
Perhaps the most curious thing about Moons is that he got Beals to cameo in it six years after their divorce and still found time to romance his leading lady, Karyn Parsons (Hilary on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air).

Cranky Critic® Movie Reviews: Four Rooms
Four Rooms is the work of four writer/ directors: Allison Anders (Gas Food Lodging, Mi Vida Loca), Alexandre Rockwell (In the Soup), Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi, Desperado), and Quentin Tarantino (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction).
Each wrote their segment with no knowledge of what the others were doing, and with the exception of Tim Roth as the Bellboy, and Jennifer Beals appearing in two of the four bits, Four Rooms is not more than four so-so stories linked together.
On the whole Four Rooms is filled with some incredibly bad acting and/or staging -- sometimes performances so bad and/or over the top are deliberate.

 All-Reviews.com Movie/Video Review: Four Rooms
The latest such example is FOUR ROOMS, 1995 black comedy that featured segments directed by Allison Anders, Alexandre Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino.
FOUR ROOMS features impressive casting (Banderas, Marisa Tomei, Jennifer Beals, Tamlyn Tomita, Bruce Willis, Paul Calderon) and two of its directors are quite talented.
Yet the result is quite disappointing, partly because their story-telling talents don't work well within 20-minute constraints of short segments nor their segments work in the context of the film as a whole.

 Film Scouts Reviews: Four Rooms
Four of today's hot young directors - Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriquez, Allison Anders and Alexandre Rockwell - decided to do a movie in which each would work independently with only one unifying character, the bellhop in a hotel.
"Four Rooms" had such an interesting genesis that it is almost easy to forgive the outcome.
"Four Rooms" never lives up to the hype and should discourage the directors from working together again.

Four Rooms is an unbearable quartet of stories written and directed by hot filmmakers Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi), Allison Anders (Gas Food Lodging), and Alexandre Rockwell (In the Soup), which only proves that even the smart guys can really blow it sometimes.
The whole film is set either in the rooms of the hotel or in the corridors, lifts or main office.
All four stories are engaging and funny, but for my money it's the last two that steal the show.

"Four Rooms," directed by Allison Anders, Alexandre Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, does not suffer from this relativity problem.

 Review: Four Rooms
Four Rooms, a four-segment anthology directed by independent film darlings Allison Anders, Alexandre Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez, and Quentin Tarantino, has to be one of 1995's major disappointments.
Four Rooms takes place on New Year's Eve at the Mon Signor Hotel, one of Los Angeles' most notorious dives.
At its best, Four Rooms is reminiscent of John Cleese's '70s TV series Fawlty Towers.

 Four empty rooms
QUENTIN TARANTINO'S continued success in the movie business remains a mystery to me. Now he has produced, with Alexandre Rockwell ("In the Soup") and Miramax, the witless "Four Rooms." The action takes place in a rundown Hollywood hotel in four different rooms, with each segment created by a different director.
Delivering ice to the wrong room, he walks in on Sigfried (David Proval) pointing a gun at his wife, Angela (Jennifer Beals), who is gagged and tied to a chair.
Tarantino, of "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs" fame, is currently at the head of a band of director-writers who seem to believe that to be blase about the shocking is the same thing as to be avant-garde and innovative.

Nine years was worth the wait for Tarantinos’ latest film
Tarantino and Rodriguez both directed, along side with two other directors (Alison Anders and Alexandre Rockwell), the independently written film Four Rooms about a hotel, and four rooms in the hotel that each contains a different story.
Later on, Tarantino wrote and directed Pulp Fiction, which skyrocketed him to infamy and hailed him as the messiah of film directors, and Rodriguez went on to write and direct the immensely successful Spy Kids children’s series, which he says he did for his own children.
Later on, Tarantino and Rodriguez collaborated together to direct the cult classic From Dusk Til Dawn, a goofy pseudo-horror film about two criminals on the run who flee to Mexico and discover a world of monsters, vampires, and zombies, all inside a local bar.
