Koumoundouros' long career encompassed many facets of political life, including serving in parliament, authoring of legislation, promotion of a democratic regime, restoration of the army, distribution of national farms to landless farmers, and the approval of major construction work (such as the Isthmus of Corinth).
In the succeeding government of 1864, Koumoundouros was moved to the Ministry of Religion and Education and later to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The time of Koumoundouros' greatest achievement came in 1881 during his last (tenth) premiership, after diplomatic contacts with Turkey, he managed to bring about the annexation of areas Thesalìa and Àrta on the Greek mainland.

One of the major problems the country faced on the road to development was a total luck of an infrastructure that would have allowed the expansion of economic activities.
Politicians such as Alexandros Mavrokordatos, Epameinondas Deligiorgis and Alexandros Koumoundouros had grasped the significance of these shortcomings but domestic problems, the main being fiscal constraints, did not permit the implementation of specific measures towards this direction.

It belonged to the Koumoundouros family, one of whom was appointed bey, or governor, of the Mani by the Ottoman rulers in the late 18th century when they eventually despaired of pacifying and taxing the fiercely independent region.
A later descendant, Alexandros, was ten times prime minister of Greece between 1856 and 1882, which shows how volatile politics used to be, in fact until recently.
You won't find anything like them anywhere else in Greece, not in the north, or Pelion, where fine fortified stone mansions are a dime a dozen, or in Western Crete, whose residents were similarly untamed and fond of vendettas.

There is a modern bust of Alexandros Koumoundouros in front of it.
Koumoundouros is remembered as one of the first politicians to seriously look to the redistribution of land in post Independence Greece.
Further to the north of the village is another older road leading towards the Rindomo or Koskarakas gorge - it eventually links to a kalderimi which goes over a stone bridge to the deserted settlement of Mavrinitsa and then Sotirianika.
