Imagine that ! Olympic Games in Greece!: Speech by Professor David Young at the Columbia University
In 1842 Soutsos put his proposal in print and in public, pleading to his king, “Let the ancient Olympic Games be revived in Athens.” I want to emphasize what the young poet’s idea really was.
Soutsos wanted to revive the Games as a step in restoring all of ancient Greece; he wanted to resurrect a dead civilization; he actually sought to revivify time.
When we know the motive behind Soutsos’ original proposal and the chain of events it set in motion, it is clear that our modern Olympics are an authentic continuation of their ancient namesake.

Prominent at this time were such figures as Anastasios Metaxas, Alexandros Nikoloudis, Vassilis Kouremenos and Kostas Kitsikis, who "filled in the gaps" left between their predecessors' neoclassical inspirations.
However, it is true that they are majestic, and a closer look reveals sculptural details executed by some of Greece's leading names at the time, among them the Academy's pediments and its statues of Athena and Apollo by Georgios Drosis.
Of more interest is the 1990s glass and steel building, once the home of the Soutsos family, which serves as both mirror and extension to the comparatively small, restored neoclassical house on the corner of pedestrian Korai Street - proving that modern and neoclassical can coexist in harmony.

National Art Gallery and Alexandros Soutzos Museum   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The actual founding of the institution dates back to 1900, when the relevant decree was published and the duties of curator were undertaken by George Iakovides (1900-1918).
The initial nucleus of paintings, which had already been formed in the early years of the new state, under governor Capodistria, was enriched by donations, particularly of works of western European art, which had belonged to wealthy Greeks of the diaspora.
To the 117 works, which the museum numbered in 1878, were added a large number of paintings donated by Alexandros Soutzos, among which are paintings by Caravaggio, Andrea Pavia, Stefano Tzangarolo, Ghyzis, Lytras, Volanakis, etc. Today, the National Gallery possesses a collection of 9.500 paintings, sculptures and engravings as well as miniatures and furniture.
