On 15 March 2007 an agreement was signed between the governments of Russia, Greece and Bulgaria to allow for an oil - pipeline to be built.
Oil would then be transported from the port by tankers with deadweight of 300 000 tons, against those currently crossing the Aegean Sea, which have half that capacity.
An initiative by citizens of Alexandroupoli (the greek terminal of the pipeline) who disagree with the realization of this project has already been formed.
