Alexei Fedorovich Losev (1893-1988) was among the greatest Russian philosophers, thinkers and classicists of the twentieth century.
Following his release, Losev was never again permitted to write on spiritual or political themes: The Dialectics of Myth thus remains his final work as well as his masterpiece.

Losev was born in Novocherkassk, where he spent much of his early childhood at the home and church of his grandfather, who was an Orthodox priest -- the source of his deep lifelong religiosity.
Losev was arrested and sent to a labor camp on the White Sea--Baltic Canal.
Losev's thought is extremely hard to understand -- not just because the style is involved and idiosyncratic but also because many of his concepts and assumptions are alien to our modern way of thinking.

Losev builds up his philosophy upon dichotomy of substance and its energies.
Losev stressed the fact that without language an individual would be imprisoned within his subjectivity, he would be essentially anti-social and non-communicative, and therefore he would also be non-individual, non-substantial, but purely an animal organism or, if a man still, he would be a madman (Losev,1990, p.49).
And only if he is understood by others and inasmuch he can understand himself (applying Losev’s terminology it may be said that one can know oneself to the extent that can be expressed in one’s energies).

They are undoubtedly special creatures, independent of myself, which settled inside me, raising argument and uproar." I am very interested in the biographical background and the personal identity of every such "alien" thought.

The reception of phenomenology in Russian philosophy of the 20th century and the originality of the Russian “phenomenological project” are of vivid interest for the contemporary phenomenologists and historians of philosophy in Russia and in the West.
This interest is conditioned among the other things by the fact that the heritage of the “early” or “classical” Russian phenomenologists, like Alexei Losev, Gustav Šchpet, Vladimir Lossky, and Simeon Frank develop some significant alternatives in relation to Edmund Husserl’s and Max Scheler’s ideas of phenomenology.
They also offer original developments of interpretation in phenomenological theory.
