Zhitnik, an unrestricted free agent, hasn't ruled out a return to the Sabres but he has declined their initial offer and will surely test the market when the league resumes play, according to The Buffalo News.
Zhitnik is the latest NHL talent to indicate he probably won't be in Kloten, Switzerland, on August 19 for the beginning of Team Russia's training camp for the upcoming World Cup of Hockey, the Canadian Press reports.
Zhitnik, currently an unrestricted free agent, says he's open to playing for the Sabres again, but he says he is seeking at least a four-year contract, according to The Buffalo News.

Upon the March 8, 2006, trade of Alternate Captain Mark Parrish, Zhitnik assumed the position for the Islanders.
Zhitnik was drafted 81st overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft.

Zhitnik's point total dropped off from his rookie season and could drop even more as his power play time is likely to decrease with the Sharks' addition of Alexander Karpovtsev, Bryan McCabe and the emergence of Dmitri Yushkevich.
Zhitnik's main purpose is to put up points and if he doesn't do it this year he may be on his way out as the Sharks look to improve on the blueline.

Signing Zhitnik would leave the Bruins with no weaknesses and be a preemptive strike against a competitor signing him.
