Alexis Bouvard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alexis Bouvard (June 27, 1767 June 7, 1843) was a French astronomer, born in Contamines, France.
Bouvard's achievements included the discovery of eight comets and the compilation of astronomical tables of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus.
This led Bouvard to hypothesise the existence of an eighth planet responsible for the irregularities in Uranus' orbit.

In 1820 Alexis Bouvard of Paris constructed tables of the motion of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus, based upon a discussion of observations up to that year.
Using the mutual perturbations of these planets as developed by Laplace in the Mecanique Celeste, he was enabled satisfactorily to represent the observed positions of Jupiter and Saturn; but the case was entirely different with.
In 1837 Bouvard, in conjunction with his nephew Eugene, was again working on the problem; but it does not seem that they went farther than to collect observations and to compare the results with Bouvard's tables.

 The Comets Of Caroline Herschel
Her brother, William Herschel, noted that the comet was visible to the naked eye, while Alexis Bouvard compared its brightness to M31, the Andromeda Galaxy.
This time, the comet was first seen on the night of 19th October, 1805 by European observers Jean Louis Pons, Johann Sigismund Huth, and Alexis Bouvard.
Thus, were it not for an inadequate number of accurate observations preventing an early reliable orbit calculation, periodic comet Encke could have easily had the alternate name of periodic comet Herschel....or comet Mechain...or comet Pons-Huth-Bouvard.

They began going over the star catalogues of earlier observers and found that the planet, named Uranus by the German astronomer Johann Elert Bode, had actually been seen 20 times prior to 1781, including as early as 1690, but misidentified as a star.
In 1821 French astronomer Alexis Bouvard compiled all the observations and encountered a major problem.
Even after taking into account the gravitational influences of the giant planets Jupiter and Saturn, he could not reconcile the data with Newton's laws of motion and gravitation.

By around 1840 irregularities in the orbit of Uranus prompted many scientists to seek reasons them.
Alexis Bouvard (a collector of planetary data) proposed that a planet might explain the irregularities and he wrote to the English Astronomer Royal Airy proposing this idea.
Bessel also proposed this solution to the problem but died before completing his calculations.
