ALEXIS PAULIN PARIS - LoveToKnow Article on ALEXIS PAULIN PARIS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Paulin Paris lived before minute methods of research had been generally applied to modern literature, and his chief merit is that by his numerous editions of early French poems he continued the work begun by Dominique Meon in arousing general interest in the then little-known epics of chivalry.
Admitted to the Academic des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres in 1837, he was shortly afterwards appointed on the commission entrusted with the continuation of the Histoire litteraire de la France.
In 1853 a chair of medieval literature was founded at the College de France, and Paulin Paris became the first occupant.

 Gaston Paris
Gaston Paris maintained that French versification was a natural development of popular Latin methods which depended on accent rather than quantity, and were as widely different from classical rules as the Low Latin was from the classical idiom.
He succeeded his father as professor of medieval French literature at the Collège de France in 1872; in 1876 he was admitted to the Academy of Inscriptions and in 1896 to the Académie française; and in 1895 he was appointed director of the Collège de France.
He had learnt German methods of exact research, but besides being an accurate philologist he was a literary critic of great acumen and breadth of view, and brought a singularly clear mind to bear on his favourite study of medieval French literature.

Paris became famous as an important center of brilliant wind instrument execution, and this undoubtedly established the woodwind quintet as we know it; Anton Reicha’s twenty-four quintets were inspired by a group of Paris-based woodwind virtuosi which included the oboist Gustave Vogt.

Hountondji was educated at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris, graduating in 1966, and taking his doctorate in 1970 (his thesis was on Edmund Husserl).
Hountondji's philosophical influences include two of his teachers in Paris, Louis Althusser and Jacques Derrida.
He argues that such an approach confuses the methods of anthropology with those of philosophy, producing “a hybrid discipline without a recognizable status in the world of theory” ([1997], p.52).

My personal hypothesis is that the prototype, a version based on the liturgical calendar for Paris, was composed by a learned Dominican theologian at the University of Paris sometime during the 13th century.
