  Alexishafen
21 km north of Madang, is the German mission of Alexishafen.
A second strip, Alexishafen II (Danip) is located to the NNW of Alexishafen.
Alexishafen was the first airfield in the South Pacific that the Japanese attempted to demolish the runway with aerial bombs, and set booby traps in the area.

 Transport - German New Guinea - German Neuguinea railways 19th Century (1884 - 1914)
Father Limbrock purchased what was described as swampland at Alexishafen, where a large steam-powered sawmill was in operation by the end of 1905.
Alexishafen mission, the sawmill and the railway were destroyed by bombing during World War II.
A new sawmill was established on the river bank adjacent to the station using salvaged equipment from Alexishafen and Japanese operations in the region.

 Alexishafen Mission
On June 13, 1944 a group of 200 men of the USN 91st Battalion arrived to begin construction with materials from Finschafen and Milne Bay, to establish the base on Bostrem Bay, on a peninsula off Alexishafen (possibly also on Megas Island and Ulimal Island also).
The mission's sign is made from a large Japanese propeller, probably from a bomber from Alexishafen.
Also, the stations of the cross are painted onto large ship screws, probably from wrecks or abandoned equipment in the harbor area.

Ryukichi Oda’s recently arrived 26th FR at the forward airstrip at Alexishafen (the unit’s main base was But-West).
Alexishafen was heavily bombed on November 9th the day the original orders were issued.
It seems that after the events at Alexishafen several assault bombers of the Capt. Kunihiko Takano’s 3rd chutai, 26th FR were concentrated at Tuluvu as the regiment’s Tuluvu Expeditionary Force.

As a result, Alexishafen had almost become a really peaceful spot and now the boys could cruise around as they pleased, lining up the target in a leisurely manner.

We put their drome out of commission altogether by digging holes all up and down the runway and putting tree trunks in the holes for posts.

There are some interesting WWII sites in Madang and along the North Coast Road and in Alexishafen.
These bases were bypassed by American forces, and not invaded until much later when Australian 15 and 21 Brigades and 7th Division recaptured Madang on April 25, 1944, and Alexishafen on April 26, 1944.
The coastal waters around this area of the north coast contain several shipwrecks and sunken planes.

Son of a Pennsylvanian farmer and railwayman, Fr Mihalic was born on November 24, 1916 to a family of 10 — four boys and six girls and raised among a “missionary magazine reading” family.
Fr Mihalic first came to PNG as a missionary in 1948 and was based in Alexishafen, Madang.
A few months later he was posted to Marienberg, East Sepik Province as parish priest where one of his first parishioners was “young” Michael Somare who later became the country’s first Prime Minister.

The Allied Air Forces had bombed the main road between Madang and Alexishafen with such good results that it was temporarily unusable.

This bird had previously done 31 operational flights totaling 1,257 miles.
Lofts of 1st Australian Pigeon Section were attached to the 5th Australian Division which captured Madang in 1944 and pushed on towards Alexishafen and Hansa Bay.

 Junkers Relics
At the Catholic Mission of Alexishafen a Junkers W33 was parked in derelicted condition for several years.
In the meantime this aircraft was removed by the National Museum Port Moresby in 1986 and it is currently under restauration at the airport of Lae.
It seems, as if this aircraft is VH-UIW "Lady Lettie", which was delivered to Taylor and Bond in 1930 and shortly afterwards went to Pacific Aerial Transport Ltd. In 1932 this aircraft crashed at Alexishafen and was later used as a spares aircraft for another Junkers F13 at Alexishafen.
