Noise To Signal: Alf Garnett On Film
Alf is backward both emotionally and intellectually, and his obvious jealousy of their sexuality and intelligence further shows his total impotence in every area of his life.
Alf is moaning in customary fashion because a power cut means he can't have breakfast, as they have an electric cooker.
The Alf Garnett Saga, on the other hand, changes both the behaviour and actors of two principal characters, presumably in an attempt to show another side to the liberation of the Sixties, but fails to portray a convincing picture of a 'modern' Mike and Rita.

 Reference.com/Encyclopedia/Alf Garnett
Alf Garnett was a fictional character on the BBC television sitcom Till Death Us Do Part and later In Sickness and in Health.
To add entertainment to the show, Alf was outraged when his daughter, Rita (played by Una Stubbs), decided to marry Michael, her long-haired, unemployed boyfriend (played by Anthony Booth) from Liverpool, a Catholic of Irish descent; precisely the type of person Alf most hated - the "Scouse Git" he called him.
Alf Garnett was the direct inspiration for Archie Bunker in the American sitcom All in the Family.

 Alf Garnett
Alf Garnett was the (fictional) racially bigoted and misogynistic linchpin of the BBC television sitcom Til Death Us Do Part, and was played masterfully throughout the series and its sequel series In Sickness and in Health by actor Warren Mitchell.
He is cowardly, mean-spirited, racist, misogynistic, anti-semitic (despite evidence that he has Jewish blood), and blames all of his problems on everybody else.
It is probably not a complete coincidence that Warren Mitchell as Alf Garnett looks exactly like Rudyard Kipling.

 Till Death Us Do Part
Alf's rhetoric was not always seen as the voice of the ignorant bigot, but often as the stifled cry of the authentic (white) working class.
While the Garnett family, and Alf in particular, were clearly represented as disgraceful and abject characters, extreme even as caricatures, many critiques of the show suggest that part of its fascination for the audience was the kernel of truth buried in the lunatic wailings.
Although Alf was challenged in his more ludicrous diatribes by his daughter Rita and son-in-law Mike, with the odd wry observation from his long-suffering wife "Old Moo", Warren Mitchell's powerful performance as Alf relegated the rest to mere bit players, as deserving butts of his wild wit.

Acceptable face of Alf Garnett returns after 30 years
ALF GARNETT is to return to our screens 31 years after he first appeared but this time he will be without the racist abuse that made him so controversial.
But the BBC said that general terms of abuse used by Alf, such as "Scouse git" and "silly moo" were still considered acceptable.
Speight said that if he was to write about Alf Garnett today, the language would go well beyond "bloody" and "bleeding", which were Alf's favourite words.

Now sadly, some of our audience would never have seen Alf Garnett in the TV series ‘Till Death Us Do Part’, and wouldn’t know what to expect, but I wasn’t surprised when 5 seconds on stage, you had us standing up and singing God Save the Queen, which is pretty amazing for Australians.

Til Death Us Do Part - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alf (and to a lesser degree his wife) represented the old guard, the traditional attitudes of the older generation.
Alf was an admirer of Enoch Powell, a right-wing Conservative politician known for his strong opposition to the immigration of non-white races into the United Kingdom.
Alf was also a fanatical supporter of West Ham United (a football team based in the East End) and was known to make derogatory remarks about "the Jews up at Spurs" (referring to Tottenham Hotspur, a North London soccer team with a sizable Jewish following).

The Avengers Forever: Warren Mitchell   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Alf was a dockworker of near-retirement age, living in the East End area of Wapping, with his suffering-in-silence wife Else, played by Dandy Nichols, daughter Una Stubbs and son-in-law Anthony Booth.
The Alf Garnett Saga (1972) was even patchier, with different actors in Booth and Stubbs' roles, and like all the work of producer/raconteur/confirmed bachelor Ned Sherrin, tried to paper over plot cracks with cameos by stars Sherrin had flmailed into taking part (including John LeMesurier).
Alf's resulting status as a widower, along with being a senior citizen, struggling on a state pension (although he wasn't too happy about Thatcher, surprisingly) couldn't help but raise the question about who the audience were really meant to have sympathy with.

 Till Death Us Do Part
The core quartet of central characters were filled out by talented dancer turned actress Una Stubbs as Rita, Alf's consistently even-handed daughter, and the Liverpudlian, former "Angry Young Man" actor Tony Booth (father of Cherie, wife of British Prime Minister Tony Blair), as her husband, Mike.
Now renamed Garnett, Alf treated his family to a weekly diatribe on the ills of present day society, putting the blame squarely on the shoulders of the incumbent Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, the permissive society, and the high influx into the country of fl immigrants.
Alf's vitriol was also let loose on his own family.

 Nichols, Dandy
Born in Hammersmith, Dandy Nichols was quite at home with the East End locale of the Garnett series, and she proved inimitable in the character with which she became most closely identified.
Deadpan in the face of Garnett's unforgivable verbal abuse, and resigned to her role as the target of much of her husband's frustration and invective, she could be by turns hilarious and pathetic and she quickly became a firm favourite of the British viewing public.
Treasured memories of her performances included the carefully-managed moments in which she would bring a careering Alf Garnett to a sudden stop in mid-tirade with some artlessly innocent observation or other, apparently oblivious of the inevitable result that she would draw the full venom of her husband's ire upon herself.

Bigoted East Ender Alf Garnett rails against the world in endless arguments with his family: his "silly old moo" wife Elsie, their daughter Rita, and her "Scouse git" husband Mike.
It soon became clear that a part of the audience was laughing along to Alf's rants about fls, immigration and the welfare state.
, Alf's lengthy rants go largely unchallenged; his wife does little more than raise an eyebrow, while the responses from daughter Rita and the wholly unsympathetic Mike are often little more than impotent quips or frustrated laughter.

Johnny Speight's creation Alf Garnett was a true larger-than-life figure, and one of the few television characters to achieve an almost Dickensian importance in the public psyche, even entering the vocabulary as a descriptive term for similar individuals.
The pub, to Alf, was his principal respite, the place to which he would bolt when, at the end of yet another bitter domestic argument, he realised either that he could take it no further or that he had been outsmarted.
Despite appearances, his series was never a racist comedy, and Alf Garnett, who held such monstrous opinions, was intended to look like a fool, not a hero, for possessing them.
