The Alfa Romeo 156 was not as well vested in motorsport as its predecessor, the 155, however it runs in the British Touring Car Championship as well as various European championships and has won the following titles.
The Alfa Romeo 156, manufactured by Alfa Romeo, was introduced in 1997 as replacement for the 155.
The GTA was subsequently stopped production in October 2005, citing poor sales and the upcoming replacement to the 156, the Alfa Romeo 159.

The Alfa Romeo 156 GTA entered by privateer team GTA Motorsport enjoyed an almost fairytale debut at Mount Panorama in the 2003 Bathurst 24-Hour.
The team is comprised of motorsport enthusiasts, most of whom are also long-term Alfa Romeo owners.

The only works team entered at Mugello was from the Abarth factory in Bologna, and, after the privately entered Alfa Romeo of Galli/Giunti crashed on the first lap, it was Arturo Mezario in a 2-litre Abarth who won, driving single-handed in very hot weather for four and a quarter hours.
Siffert, in a fury, took over to try and regain the lead, but the Alfa Romeo 33 of Galli, Bianchi, and Vacarella was two minutes ahead at the finish.
The main challenge to the Italian cars came from local boy Nanni Galli (1.8-litre Lola T210), who set fastest lap before retiring with a broken throttle cable.

In 1983 Lucchini established his own Brixia Motor Sport to run a Lancia 037 in the Italian Rally Championship and later a pair of Beretta-sponsored semi-works Alfa Romeo 75 Turbos in the World Touring Car Championship.
Dallara hired Sergio Rinland from Brabham to design the car and Lucchini launched Scuderia Italia in 1988 with Vittorio Palazzani running the Brescia-based team, Patrizio Cantu as team manager and Rinland as chief engineer.

Giuseppe farina and Juan-Manuel Fangio were joined in the Alfa team by Consalvo Sanesi and Felice Bonetto while Ferrari gave Froilan Gonzalez another run alongside Gigi Villoresi and Alberto Ascari although the Argentine had an older chassis and engine than his teammates.
Villoresi - the established Ferrari star - was third two laps behind.
