In the News (Sun 27 May 12)

No reason for their arrest was given either to them or to their families, nor have any charges been filed against them, but the Ecuadorian press has linked their arrest with police measures against the "Alfaro Vive Carajo" (AVC) guerrilla group.
Because of all this, there is fear for their physical integrity and for their lives, in view of the torture (suffocation, beatings, electric shocks, etc.) regularly inflicted on persons suspected of membership in the AVC to extort spurious confessions from them.
It is demanded that they be allowed to receive visits from members of their families, that charges be filed against them, and that they be placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authorities so that counsel may be appointed to defend them or they may be set at liberty.

On Jan. 12 some 3,000 Ecuadoran high school and university students protested in front of the Carondelet government palace in Quito to demand that Ecuador withdraw from negotiations over a Free Trade Treaty (TLC) with Peru, Colombia and the US (known in English as the Andean Free Trade Agreement).

Thus, when I finally got around to acquiring their first EP, Hell Paso I was expecting to have a distaste for it, especially since I hadn’t enjoyed Alfaro Vive, Carajo!
However, the crap production actually helps the album more than it hurts it, with much of the albums charm coming from the fact that its all so cheap.
Emptiness is a Mule is a pretty outstanding track in all honesty though.

Some victims had been buried in unmarked graves in a police precinct in Pusuquí, near Quito, the capital, and close to the Cuenca_Girón highway.

Formed in early 1994, the group debuted soon after with their first EP, Hell Paso, followed by a brief tour across the Lone Star state.
With a line-up secured around Cedric Bixler (vocals), Omar Rodriguez and Jim Ward (guitar), Paul Hinojos (bass) and Tony Hajjar (drums), At the Drive-In continued on with a second EP (Alfaro Vive, Carajo) and toured mostly empty houses and clubs across the western United States.
A small gig in Los Angeles — with an audience consisting of only nine people — somehow got the attention of Flipside Records, who released the band's first full-length Acrobatic Tenement in 1996.

Eloy Alfaro was president of Ecuador a few times prior to his assassination and dismemberment by an angry mob in Quito.
Decades afterwards, a communist insurgent group adopted his name for their motto and group name (Alfaro Lives, Dammit!!) The group was pretty well eradicated in the 1980's through some pretty severe measures by the Ecuadorian Army and police forces.
