 TheMovieBoy Review - Alfie (2004)
"Alfie," a remake of the 1966 film starring Michael Caine in the title role, thematically reminds of a more accessible, personalized version of the recent "I ♥ Huckabees." Although it is easier to wrap your finger around, and, thus, more audience-friendly for the mainstream faction, it is in no way simpler or condescending.
Alfie's story is told through his varied interactions with the women in his life, each one given enough time to make an impact as a person who feels real rather than a thin screenplay creation.
There are times as "Alfie" rounds the corner to its finish line that threaten to become routine, as Alfie makes his way around town reuniting with the women in his life and being faced with one eye-opening discovery after the next, but director Charles Shyer fortunately never quite falls into a predictable melodramatic pattern.

 Alfie (2004)
Alfie (Law) is a womanizer--a hound, a playa--in designer clothes scooting around a Manhattan that's been tarted up like Jacques Demy's Cherbourg in primary colors and graffiti declarations ("Desire," "Pursuit," "Lost"), which identifies the film as impressionistic at best, magic realism at least.
Alfie has a light touch--too light, as it happens, as the terminally commitment-phobic Alfie has been transformed into an affable lad who loves children and has a real sweetness about him, but just needs a wake-up call from the maturity police.
Law's Alfie is so ethereal that he's like an angel; and his "victims" are so unequivocally ravishing that seeing them seduced by Law is more akin to the voyeuristic pleasure of soft-porn than to the devastating effect of watching lonely people reaching for companionship in a creature too damaged to be able to provide it.

Alfie (2004): Jude Law, Omar Epps, Susan Sarandon, Nia Long - PopMatters Film Review
In 2004, his concerns are almost wholly about him, his relationship to the pregnancy, his best friend betrayed, his inability to commit to anyone beyond himself (he again goes through the cancer scare).
Alfie's banal lack of empathy is just annoying: he's stuck in a time warp, still believing that man's absolute freedom in all matters sexual and familial is eternal.
No surprise, the film is unable to work through this crisis coherently, but instead makes it into Alfie's personal predicament (as he literally worries about his losses), leaving out the historical, cultural background of Marlon's (possible) distress and sense of betrayal.

Alfie, on the other hand, is near-soulless; love needs only work for as long as it takes to get a woman in bed.
The film is presented in an anamorphic widescreen transfer, in an aspect ratio of 1.85:1.
It's a dialogue-driven film, not necessarily demanding of a flashy mix, but the DVD might as well just have provided a two-channel stereo track (there is one, and it's tough to tell apart from the 5.1).

Alfie doesn't help the situation when he sleeps with her (and ends up pregnant with his child).
Alfie's own attempts at long-term relationships backfire when he hooks up with a manic-depressive, and, getting a taste of his own medicine, falls for an older woman (Susan Sarandon) who's even more shallow than he was.
Alfie narrates his story, addressing us directly at the camera while events unfold, and the film makes a slow, smooth transition from a playful sex comedy to a sobering realization that life means little without a constant companion to share it with.

Admittedly, it's a lot easier to argue the case for a new version of Alfie (to today's audiences, the 1966 original could be considered "obscure") than Psycho, but somehow the film doesn't work as well as it should.
Throughout the first half of the film, Alfie plays the perfect womanizer, a "fashion whore" who goes after every pretty FBB (face, boobs, bum) he sees, without concern for the consequences.
Alfie has the requisite moments of pathos and humor that allow the movie to be enjoyed on some level, even if the main character occasionally feels like a walking, talking anachronism.

This task was made easier by the fact that abortion was still illegal in 1966, which gave the film a larger moral context in terms of the real consequences of Alfie's recklessness, as well as the film's ability to portray the women he so casually uses and then discards as victims.
The other characters in the film are simply moons in Law's orbit, easily forgettable, except for Omar Epps, who after portraying a hapless schmuck for most of the film, gets One Terrific Moment that you won't soon forget; and Susan Sarandon, who is a role model for Women of a Certain Age everywhere.
Marisa Tomei seems pinched, miscast, and shrewish as Alfie's single-mom girlfriend, and Sienna Miller seems an empty Guess model of a bubblehead, with an unfortunate resemblance to Britney Spears, until the moment she must come to terms with the wreckage of life with Alfie.

All things must change though, and after Alfie manages to behave so badly he loses the only three people in the world he actually cares about, including his best friend, it starts to dawn on Alfie that he might, just maybe, be going about life all wrong, and possibly, could be, a complete arsehole.
The problem with Alfie is he beds everyone he meets within 20 minutes, so even when he sticks around long enough to learn their names we’re not waiting for people to get together, just for them to fall apart, which really isn’t very romantic at all.
Alfie is supposed to be re-evaluating his life, the problems he’s caused are meant to be making him realise he’s been going about life all wrong, and search for the right way of doing things.

One thing that was a particularly effective choice in the film was the editing - in general it was quite stellar, incredibly stylized for its subject, but yet not distracting.

The frankly slapdash 1966 film got by largely on the rogueish charm of Michael Caine as the seducer of the title.
With the action transposed to present-day New York, Alfie Mark II (a commitment-phobic limo driver) has his wicked way with a series of ladies before it begins to dawn on him that maybe an endless string of brief sexual encounters isn't what it's all about.
A creaky effort has been made to update the original's post-pill, pre-feminism attitudes towards women, but the chatty hero — this version retains Alfie's straight-to-camera speeches — is still a bit of a loser.
