Battle of Custoza (1866) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Battle of Custoza took place on 24 June 1866 during the Italian campaign of the Austro-Prussian War (also known as Third Independence war in the Italian unification process).
The Austrian Empire army, led by Archduke Albert of Habsburg, defeated the Italian army led by Alfonso Ferrero la Marmora and Enrico Cialdini, in spite of the Italians' strong numerical advantage.
This battle was however inconclusive, since the Prussian army, allied to Italy, defeated the Austrian army in Germany, obliging Austrians to ask for peace.

La Marmora was born at Turin, and distinguished himself during the Sardinian war of independence from Austria in 1848.
In 1866, as foreign minister, he concluded a secret alliance with Prussia against Austria (the Seven Weeks' War), but was defeated by the Austrians at the battle of Custozza.
