  Alfonso I of Aragon
Alfonso I of Aragon 'the Battler' (circa 1073-1134, king of Aragon and Navarre 1104-1134).
The marriage had been arranged by Alfonso VI of Castile in 1106 to unite the two chief Christian states against the Almoravides, and to supply them with a capable military leader.
Alfonso the Battler won his great successes in the middle Ebro, where he expelled the Moors from Zaragoza; in the great raid of 1125, when he carried away a large part of the subject Christians from Granada, and in the south-west of France, where he had rights as king of Navarre.

Alfonso was defeated by his brother in two battles; after the defeat at Llantada in 1068 he managed to retain his kingdom, but after that at Golpejera in 1072 he was captured and exiled, living for a short while at the court of his vassal Ma’mun, the Muslim king of Toledo.
Alfonso appealed for help to the rest of Christendom, and a small Crusade was organized as a result; the Crusaders did not reach Alfonso's lands but wasted their energies and resources in an unsuccessful siege of the Muslim outpost of Tudela.

Alfonso had established strong political and religious ties with Burgundy and had married three French princesses, had wed both of his daughters to Burgundian nobles who had come to seek their fortunes battling the infidels in Hispania.
Alfonso's heiress, Urraca, already widowed at her father's death was unable to receive the crown by Leonese custom so immediately following her father's death, she was married to the only reigning king in Hispania, Alfonso I "the Battler", sovereign of Aragon and Navarre but it was a political and conjugal failure from the beginning.
The marriage between the distant cousins was annulled by the papacy as incestuous and after several years of political frustration and civil war, Alfonso the Battler withdrew completely and returned to his raids against the Muslims, leaving Urraca's very young son by her first marriage to eventually succeed him as Alfonso VII of Castile-León.

The misogynistic Alfonso may also have been sterile, impotent or even gay, these theories stemming from his utter lack of progeny, either legitimate or illegitimate, and Urraca's continued fertility after their divorce.

 Tudela Information
When King Alfonso the Battler captured the town from the Muslims in 1114 it contained a large number of Jews.
In fact, several of Tudela's better-known Jews were born during the time of Muslim political control, although Benjamin of Tudela was probably born soon after the Christian conquest.
The Jews were not content with a "fuero" (charter) granted in 1115 by the conqueror, and suspecting that their safety was threatened, they decided to emigrate; only at the special request of Alfonso and on his promise that they should be granted municipal rights similar to those of Nájera, did the Jews consent to remain.
