Alford, pronounced without the "L", lies on slightly rising ground just to the south of the River Don as it makes its stately progress towards Aberdeen and the sea.
It was the river, or rather the bridge that Thomas Telford built over it in the early 1800s, that started Alford's growth.
In 1859, Alford also became the terminus of the Alford Valley Railway which connected the village to the main network through Aberdeen, and its future was assured.

The Vale of Alford Railway in the Vale of Alford, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, was built in 1859 as a Great North of Scotland Railway branch line from Kintore, northwest of Aberdeen.
The line is now closed but a 2 ft (601 mm) narrow gauge line now runs for part of its length.
The narrow gauge railway runs from the original, wooden Alford railway station alongside a golf course, to Haughton Country Park.

This branch line, established by the original Alford Valley Railway Company, was opened in 1859 and played a significant role in the growth and prosperity of the present village until the development of road transport in the 1940's.
The Alford Valley Railway Company Ltd. was reborn in 1979 following the decision to create a narrow-gauge railway at Alford adjacent to the Grampian Transport Museum, plans for which were currently being developed by a group of enthusiasts from the north-east of Scotland, led by the Company Chairman James Gordon.
The second phase of the railway, from the restored station and yard of the original Alford branch-line, past the golf course, into the Haughton Park, was inaugurated in 1984.
