Topic: Alfred (comics)

In the News (Sat 26 Dec 09)

Alfred Pennyworth - DC Database - A Wikia wiki
The Pre-Crisis comics (i.e., comics published by DC Comics between 1938 and 1986) established Alfred as a retired intelligence agent who followed the deathbed wish of his dying father, Jarvis, to carry on the tradition of serving the Wayne Family.
That night, Alfred awoke to moaning and followed the sound to the secret door to the staircase to the Batcave and met his would be employers in their superhero identities (Wayne had been injured while out in the field).
Alfred even uses hand-to-hand combat in a rare on-panel fight sequence between him and a pair of slavers that ends with his rescue by a just-returned Batman.

 Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Harvey Comics
In the early 1940s, Harvey Comics (founded by brothers Leon, Robert and Alfred Harvey) was a very small, but otherwise very typical comic book publisher.
Speed was a typical comic of the time, an anthology title headed up by superheroes —; in this case, Shock Gibson, Captain Freedom (a patriotic type like Captain America or The Shield), and others equally memorable.
By the 1980s, comic book sales in general were down, especially for publishers that didn't have well established superheroes on the market.

Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Alfred E. Neuman
And yet, Alfred E. Neuman has become so closely associated with Mad that by 1963, a letter mailed from Auckland, New Zealand, with no address other than his picture, managed to find its way to the magazine's editorial office in New York City.
So prolific were pre-Mad uses of the face, that when the magazine was sued for copyright infringement (twice, once based on a 1914 copyright and the other on a 1936 one), its major defense was to show the court that the plaintiffs had copied it from even earlier sources.
Four months later, when the publication was reformatted as a magazine, he again appeared on the cover, in addition to playing cameo roles in several interior items, and he's been the magazine's official mascot ever since.

How old is Alfred? - The Superhero Hype! Boards
Alfred was already grown and working for the Waynes when Bruce's parents were killed.
If Bruce's parents were killed when he was 8 years old and Alfred was little over 30 back then (which I think is a probable age), then it would place Alfred at 47 when Bruce was 25 (at the beginning of his career).
If we're to believe current comics continuity and Bruce is 35, then Alfred would be 57.

In Kane’s defense, it was common practice in the early days of newspaper comics and comic books to only credit the artist and not his writers or assistants, but considering how much Finger contributed and would continue to contribute to the Batman mythology, the omission remained galling.
After helping the Dynamic Duo solve a case involving murderous jewel thieves (without admitting he knows their secret), Alfred is permitted to stay on as the butler, at which point he helpfully brings them their costumes the next time the Bat-Signal goes off, impressing them with his supposed deductive skills.
Over time, Alfred (later given the surname Pennyworth) became less of a stereotype, as well as slimming down considerably and growing the natty mustache readers are accustomed to seeing.

Harvey Comics History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The company created by Alfred Harvey (who, at one time, worked for Fox Publications alongside young talents Joe Simon and Jack Kirby) scored early successes through well-known characters licensed from other creators, such as The Green Hornet, Blondie, Terry and the Pirates, Dick Tracy, Li'l Abner, Felix the Cat, and many others.
In the ensuing years, Alfred Harvey augmented this roster with equally endearing creations of his own - including Wendy the Good Little Witch, Little Dot, and Richie Rich and all enjoyed tremendous popularity among youngsters in their comics (and in theatrical, then televised, cartoons) throughout the 1960s.
He also proudly lent the characters to public service announcements for various organizations, increasing their visibility and firmly establishing Harvey Comics as a leader in comic book entertainment.

 Richie Rich Page
Although artist Warren Kremer and Harvey Editor Sid Jacobson both lay claim that they created the character (and in the case of Warren, named him after his son), the realities of the situation point to Harvey Comics founder, Alfred Harvey as Richie's creator, as early as the 1930s.
As in Archie Comics, the rival is named Reggie, but this Reggie is Richie's snobbish cousin, Reggie Van Dough.
In this series, the cartoons are fairly faithful to their comic book counterparts, except that Richie, Reggie and Gloria appear to be about 12 years old instead of 7 or 8 as in the comics.
