Alfred Leo Duggan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Duggan's battle scenes, although they reveal an expert eye for the minutiae of combat, are terse and understated, describing in a coldly efficient manner what is an essentially repellent activity.
Duggan's main areas of interest are the Middle Ages (especially the time of the Crusades), the Roman period, and the further edge of antiquity containing the Hellenic civilization.
Duggan displays all the old strengths refined to near-perfection, the dialogue crisp and assured, the action scenes neatly handled, the subtle examination of character and motive as purposeful as ever.

 Literary criticism by JD
Duggan wrote no other fiction, only a handful of nonfiction books aimed mainly at children and teens, dealing with historical topics that can, in any case, mostly be found well presented in the novels.
Duggan speaks frankly about adult matters, but his books are free of salacity and profanity, and I would recommend them without reservation to intelligent young-teen readers of the present day.) These are low points, though.
Alfred’s mother was Grace Elvina Hinds, of the Hinds mansion in Decatur, Alabama, to where her father, J. Monroe Hinds, had moved after distinguished service in the Union cause during the Civil War.

George Nathaniel Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After a long affair with the romance novelist Elinor Glyn, Curzon married, in 1917, the former Grace Elvina Hinds, the Alabama-born widow of Alfred Hubert Duggan, an Englishman who was born and died in Argentina.
The daughter of a U.S. Minister to Brazil, Duggan had three children from her first marriage: Alfred Leo Duggan, Hubert Duggan, and Marcella Duggan.
Despite fertility-related operations and several miscarriages, she was never able to give Curzon the son and heir he desperately desired, a fact that eroded their marriage, which ended in separation, though not divorce.

Henry II could justly claim that “during all his long and tyrannous reign not a single captive of importance died in any of his prisons” (Duggan 240).
At the time of John’s accession, there was already trouble with the barons as a result of Henry II’s “vigorous curtailment of their irresponsible behavior and from the crushing taxes Richard had levied” (John T. Appleby, John King of England [New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1958], 86).

The murder of St. Thomas, Archbishop of Canterbury, in his own cathedral on December 29, 1170, shocked contemporaries in an age that was relatively used to deeds of violence.
The dramatic scene is thus reconstructed by the historical novelist Alfred Duggan in his novel devoted to the Saint.
Presently the Cathedral was quite silent; until the sacristan crept out from under a choir stall to remove, as reverently as his shaking hands would permit, the pyx which might not remain in this desecrated House of God.
