  Victorian Art in Britain
East was born in Kettering, and like many other young men in the town went into the shoe making trade, in his case very reluctantly.
Alfred East became ARA in 1899, and a full Royal Academician in the year of his death.
East had been a constant exhibitor in London, the provinces, and Paris since 1883, at which year three of works were hung at the Royal Academy.

Sir Alfred East, R.A. A brief biography Alfred East was born in Lower Street, Kettering in 1849 and left for Paris in 1880 to devote his life to art, achieving wide recognition as a landscape artist.
The paintings of Alfred East were on exhibition here together with works by eminent artists such as T C Gotch and J T Nettleship (both of whom were townsmen of Kettering), and Frank Salisbury.
Morrison's have generously donated the plaque in honour of the life of Sir Alfred Edward East RA and remembering the site at 20 Lower Street where he was born.

Sadly Sir Alfred East who had just been elected as a full Academician (R.A.) was too ill to attend and died aged 69 less than three months later.

Everything about the place was splendid, from the rooms (we chose Room 5 with a great view over the river at Port Alfred), to the breakfasts (great choice), to the honesty bar and to the pool.
But the best part was the staff of the guest house - from the manager (Meagan) who had her finger on every button (everything was just as you would want it to be), to Michael who watched over visitor’s cars overnight and to the lovely African girls who generally looked after us.
If you want a great place for a few days off the beaten track in SA - Port Alfred might fit the bill and the Royal provide the place to rest a weary head.
