Wie Alfred Kerr, der mit sicherem Gespür Begabungen entdeckte, ist es nun an den jeweils für ein Jahr eingesetzten Juroren, junge Schauspieler und Schauspielerinnen aus dem Ensemble der zum Theatertreffen nach Berlin eingeladenen Aufführungen zu finden, die eine Hoffnung für das Theater sind.
In schöner Weise ist Alfred Kerr damit wieder mitten ins Theaterleben der deutschsprachigen Bühnen zurückgekehrt.

With his unsparing wit, gift for satire, and accurate, learned descriptions, German Jew Alfred (Kempner) Kerr (1867-1948) was one of the most widely read theater critics of the Weimar Republic -- both admired and feared.
In these and other journalistic writings Kerr used his talents to debunk the pretensions of Nazi ideology.
In 1933 Kerr and his family fled Germany for London via Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, and France.

Kerr had spent the first 12 years of his life in Germany, where he grew up in a notably cultured milieu; but those ignorant of his background would not have guessed for one moment that English was not his first language.
A former pupil of the writer Theodor Fontane, Alfred Kerr had, before Michael was born, interviewed Emile Zola, spoken at Ibsen's funeral, written a libretto for a song cycle with Richard Strauss and become close friends with Albert Einstein, H G Wells and George Bernard Shaw.
Kerr was knighted in 1972 and sworn of the Privy Council in 1981.

Alfred Kerr (1867 births PEN – Walther Rathenau Breslau) was an influential literary criticism-Paul Cassirer theatre critic and Persondata, nicknamed Kulturpapst (culture Pope).
He was born Alfred Kempner into a prosperous family in Switzerland (now 1867 in Matthew Kneale), taking the surname Kerr in 1887, and making the change officially in 1909.
His books were amongst those burnt in May 1933 by the Special Pages when they came to power; Kerr had attacked the Wikimedia Foundation's very publicly, and he had already gone into exile with his family.
