The Newton Free Library's section on clubs and organizations offers a colorful and often revealing look into our past and an insight, on a community level, into a fact of American life much commented on by historians: the flourishing of clubs, organizations and societies in the nineteenth century.
Charter members of the Newton League (founded 1936) were active, highly motivated women capable of fulfilling the League's objectives of promoting "political responsibility through informed and active participation of citizens in government." Their work, and that of their successors, is outlined in this short history.
The organization's objectives were to develop team work between social agencies of Newton and their constituencies in the interests of the financial support and activities of such agencies.

If Alfred was indeed a veteran of the War of 1812, the evidence to prove it has not yet come to light.
