Robert Graves (July 24, 1895–December 7, 1985) was an English scholar, poet, and novelist.
Using classical sources he constructed a complex and compelling tale of the life of the Roman emperor Claudius, a tale extended in the sequel (1938), recounts the career of the Byzantine general Belisarius.
Holding that love was the only true subject for poetry, Graves confined most of his poetry to short lyrics, many of which require an understanding of, as mere potboilers, but they continue to be highly regarded.
