Topic: Alfred Shaw

Alfred. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
Alfred captured (886) London and concluded another treaty with Guthrum that marked off the Danelaw E and N of the Thames, Lea, and Ouse rivers, and Watling Street, leaving the south and west of England to Alfred.
Alfred’s greatest achievements, however, were the revival of learning and the establishment of Old English literary prose.
Alfred liberally interpolated his own thoughts into his writings, and the Orosius is particularly interesting for the addition of accounts of voyages made by the Norse explorers Ohthere and Wulfstan.

The Mozart Effect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The "Mozart Effect" is a term coined by Alfred Tomatis, a French physician who has devoted his life over the past fifty years to the physiological effects of sound.
More recently, Gordon Shaw and Frances Rauscher at the Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory (University of California - Irvine) conducted specific research studies where listening to the music of Mozart was shown to improve spatial skills.
Alfred Tomatis suggests that because the ear's vestibular function influences several muscles and through the vagus nerve connects to several organs, auditory vibrations from the eardrum interact with parasympathetic nerves which regulate all the major organs of the body.

Cricinfo - Players and Officials - Alfred Shaw
In this early part of his career Shaw's bowling was faster than in later years, and he was essentially an all-round man. Indeed, so good was his batting that in the Gentlemen and Players' match at the Oval in 1866 he made a score of 70.
Still, Shaw contended that even modern batsmen would not have dared to pull so much if the bowling had been as steady in length as it was in his time.
Shaw went to Australia for the last time as manager of Lord Sheffield's eleven in 1891-92, and discharged a difficult task with unfailing tact and judgment.
