Topic: Alfredo Alcala

  Alfredo Alcala
Alfredo Alcala was born in the Philippines on August 23, 1925.
Before the year was out, Alfredo Alcala was in the pages of Ace Publications, the largest publisher in the Philippines, and well on his way to becoming a mainstay of their line of comics — for reasons of quantity as well as quality.
Alcala's transition to drawing for the American market began in the early seventies when an intermediary arranged for a group of artists in the Philippines to sell work to DC Comics.

Alcala’s work eventually began gracing the pages of DC’s horror/ mystery titles, where his talent for moody, atmospheric environments and textures seemed to come alive, as opposed to the vibrant colors of the superhero set.
Depending on the viewpoint, it was often felt that the greatest benefit, or the greatest drawback, to collaborating with Alfredo Alcala was his distinctive style.

This comic introduced Alcala to fantasy fans in the United States, where he won several science-fiction awards in the early 1970s.

Inker is probably not the correct term to describe the work Alfredo Alcala has done for Conan over John Buscema, specially after seeing personally how loose John's pencils can be.
It is possibly the looseness of John's pencils that enabled not only Alfredo but many Filipino artists like Ernie Chan and Rudy Nebres to finish the pages given to them leaving a strong impression of their personal identities as artists.
Finisher is probably a better term for it is actually what Alfredo did, and being an enormously talented artists himself, he brought a lot of himself in many of the inking projects that he did.
