Alfredo Casella - Missa solemnis pro pace op. 71
Sterling pianist, protean composer, broad-minded conductor, crack organizer, incisive writer, painstaking editor: Alfredo Casella was all these things at once, and as such he was the commanding figure in modern Italian music during the first half of the twentieth century.
Casella was an artist of wide-ranging interests and emotional attachments, and though his compositional oeuvre is sometimes claimed to lack a personal voice, the brilliance of his conceptions or the finesse of his workmanship have never been questioned.

Alfredo Casella: Biography - Classic Cat
Casella came from a musical family; his grandfather, a friend of Paganini's, was first cello in the San Carlo Theater in Lisbon and eventually was soloist in the Royal Chapel in Torino.
Alfredo's father and two uncles, Carlo, Cesare, and Gioacchino were all professional cellists of some note; his mother was a pianist, and gave Alfredo his first lessons.
Casella was perhaps the most "international" in outlook and stylistic influences of the generazione dell'ottanta, owing at least in part to his early musical training in Paris and the circle in which he lived and worked while there.

'Alfredo Casella: Orchestra Works' (Music) - American Poems   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Casella (1883-1947) was an Italian composer, pianist, and conductor who led the Boston Pops for three seasons just before Arthur Fiedler took over in 1929.
This well-played disc might not be very useful for those who already know Casella's music, since the Serenata (once available on a horribly played Urania LP) is an arrangement from a chamber work, the Concerto an orchestrated string quartet, and the Divertimento comes from a ballet based on children's piano music.
There isn't much to say here except that Casella was a genius way ahead of his time, and that his music, especially as performed here, has that timeless and transluscent quality peculiar to Italian music of the 20th century.

Not unnaturally, Casella explored and his output falls into three categories: romanticism, experimental, and a blend that admitted his favoured ingredients in clear-cut forms.
Whilst neoclassicism can tempt a composer to an impersonal chatter of notes, Casella had more than that and used it intensely, especially in the slow movements, with a considerable depth of expression.
