  Sidney, Algernon. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
He served in the parliamentary forces during the English civil war and was a member (1652–53) of the council of state of the Commonwealth, but he opposed the dictatorial rule of Oliver Cromwell.
After a brutal and arbitrary trial by Judge Jeffreys, Sidney was convicted of treason and executed.
Sidney’s liberal ideals were set forth in his Discourses Concerning Government (1698), a treatise that had great influence on 18th-century political thought, especially in the American colonies.

Born in 1622, Sidney was the second son of the Earl of Leicester and a nephew of the poet Philip Sidney.
Sidney returned to his seat in 1659 and was one of three men sent by England to negotiate peace in the war between Denmark (which also controlled Norway) and Sweden.
The defiant Sidney was arrested on June 26, 1683, for his alleged part in the "Rye House Plot." The prosecution searched his home and found his writings, which he claimed were not intended for publication.

Algernon Sydney (or Sidney), (January 1623 – December 7, 1683), was an English politician, an opponent of King Charles II of England.
A son of the Earl of Leicester, and the great-nephew of Sir Philip Sidney, he is thought to have been born at Penshurst Place in Kent.
During the English Civil War, he joined the army of Parliament, but became critical of Oliver Cromwell's leadership.

Algernon settled on the west bank of the St. John’s River near Ft. Mellon which was located on the southeast shore of Lake Monroe.
Algernon’s river-side location was ideal since the fertile lands along the river were prime candidates for crop cultivation and the river itself was the principle travel and freight transportation for the numerous new communities that were springing up along it’s course.
Algernon Sidney’s body was recovered four months later and he was buried September 7, 1857 in Volusia, Florida.

As he grew up, Sidney (as his friends and family called him) didn't want to wear old, tough farm clothes; he enjoyed wearing finer clothes made from good cloth.
