ALGIERS, Algeria (CNN) -- More than 400 people were killed in separate attacks on four villages in western Algeria on Tuesday, the first day of the holy month of Ramadan, according to a report in an Algiers newspaper.
Algeria's government Wednesday acknowledged that the attacks had taken place, but on state radio, it said that only 78 people had been killed.
Four members of the farmers' families were injured in the attack, which took place in a rural area near the town of Chebli, 25 kilometers (15 miles) south of Algiers, according to a hospital source and one of the farmers.

In his visit to Algeria, Senator Lugar met with President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in Algiers and then traveled to Tindouf where he met with Polisario leader Abdelaziz and witnessed the release of the Moroccan prisoners into ICRC custody.
The Senator further underscored the importance the United States attaches to “improved relations between Morocco and Algeria with a view to creating a regional climate conducive” to settling the Western Sahara conflict and urged all parties to seize on the opportunity presented by the prisoner release to create a more positive dynamic in the region.
