 Algoma District - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about Algoma District
It is located on the east of Lake Superior and north of the St Marys River and the North Channel of Lake Huron.
Extending north into the Canadian Shield, the Algoma region has been an important iron and steel producer since before 1900, the industry centring on Sault Ste Marie (the Soo) and drawing on resources in the north.
The Algoma Central Railway (1899) connected the Soo with Wawa, and later with Hearst, 470 km/290 mi to the north.

The riding of Nickel Belt was created in 1952 from parts of the ridings of Algoma East, Sudbury, Parry Sound—Muskoka and Nipissing.

Algoma East would become the constituency of future Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson a few years later.
I have never seen a "ballot box" listed in tables of postal rates, presumably it was regarded as a parcel and the 60 cent rate paid for the weight of the large tin box used in the 1940s.

South of Espanola the track bears east until Tulloch Lake where it curves south to pass to the east of Anderson Lake and then between Loon Lake and Spring Lake.
The line is heading east at this point and continues to do so until it meets Whitefish River between Charleton and Frood Lakes.
The siding at Whitefish Falls is still in place although the station, which was located north of the highway overpass on the west side of the tracks and the wye on the east side of the tracks, which was used to turn steam locomotives servicing the Lawson quarry are long gone.

Yardley was really empty and so we just headed east towards ID. The next train we saw was in Hauser ID. In the yard there was a westbound Boeing train (BNSF 4038, NS 8834) and a westbound stack train (ATSF 880(patched) BNSF 4799) both ready to depart.
Anyway, continuing on east we stopped to wait for something just south of Athol, ID. After a few minutes of waiting we heard a horn and soon after a westbound stack and TOFC train came flying by (BNSF 5351, 342).
On the way we saw that another eastbound was just pulling up and stopping at East Algoma to wait for the westbound.
