Flipside Movie Emporium: Ali Movie Review
Ali's bravado and bluster dominate the screen; people gravitate towards him almost instinctively, whether in the ring or on a Harlem street corner.
The decade encapsulates most of the vital events in Ali's life: his association with the Nation of Islam, his refusal to submit to the draft (and three-year banishment from boxing), his loss to Joe Frazier and triumphant return to the heavyweight throne against Foreman.
Ali respects Cosell's blunt honesty and willingness to challenge him, while Cosell sees a highly ethical young man with a willingness to grab the world by the tail.

Writer Gregory Allen Howard’s script tackles everything from Ali’s relationship with the Nation of Islam, his political stance on Vietnam and the assassinations of Doctor King and Malcolm X, with several fights and a court battle thrown in for good measure.
When he returns after being banished from Ali’s camp, having traded his flashy hipster threads for sober, thick framed glasses and a dull brown wind breaker, you almost weep with empathy as he quietly begs forgiveness, the heartfelt resolve emanating from his very being.
Ali was forced to make difficult choices, about his religion, about Vietnam and about race that in the hyper marketed world of professional sports today simply aren’t relevant.

"Ali" covers ten years of the boxer's life, from his world championship-winning fight as Cassius Clay in 1964 to his comeback against George Forman in 1974's 'Rumble in the Jungle', which took place in Zaire.
True, Ali is portrayed as a fl man who wants to make it to the top of a world on his own terms and with his dignity intact.
As a result, "Ali" seems a lot longer than it needs to be as it meanders from one sequence to the next, with scenes that either seem to have little relevance or run far longer than they need to be.

A biopic such as this, where the central figure is as well-known and as Well loved as Ali was, is inevitably going to stand or fall on its central performance.
Certain elements of Ali’s life (principally the details of his relationships and the political machinations behind the decision to strip him of his title) are glossed over and for all the film’s claims to the contrary we never really learn anything new about Ali himself.
Having said that, Ali remains an extremely enjoyable, frequently exhilarating film to watch and Smith’s performance has to be seen to be believed.
