Field Marshal Ali Abdullah Saleh (Arabic: علي عبد الله صالح) (born March 21, 1942) is the current President of Yemen.
Saleh was Yemen's first directly elected president in 1999, winning 96.2% of the vote, but the main opposition socialist party was barred from the election.
Saleh was sworn in for another term on September 27.

In North Yemen President Saleh was re-elected for a further five years in 1983, and again in 1988, while in South Yemen Ali Nasser Muhammad was re-elected secretary general of the YSP and its political bureau for another five years in 1985.
The unification was proclaimed in May, with Ali Abdullah Saleh as leader of the new Republic of Yemen and San'a as its capital.
The winner, predictably, was Ali Abdullah Saleh, former president of North Yemen, and president of the unified Yemen for the past nine years.

The President of Yemen has been very diplomatic on being supportive of both Democratic and Republican administrations.President Saleh has also resumed ties with Saudi Arabia following the Yemeni government's severed relations after standing neutral during desert storm forcing an almost estimated 1 million Yemenis living in the Kingdom to be deported.
However, he has done the impossible, now King Abdullah recently stated that Yemen is a part of the Gulf.
President Saleh has skills and we are confident that this President is on the verge of becoming re-elected in 2006.

As President ‘Ali ‘Abdullah Saleh began a visit to Washington to meet US President George W. Bush, Amnesty International called on the Yemeni President to make clear that his country will no longer hold its nationals in indefinite detention without trial on behalf or at the behest of US authorities.
Currently, the Yemeni authorities continue to hold four of their own nationals without charge or trial, apparently on the instructions of the US government, three of whom were formerly “disappeared” and held in secret US-run interrogation centres for periods over one year before being handed to Yemeni custody.
