According to the final results announced Monday, the president received a staggering 86.5 per cent of the votes, formalising an enormous gap between him and his rivals.
Ali Ben Flis, his former prime minister, was considered Bouteflika's main competitor given the president's relentless efforts to weaken his position over the past few months.
It was something of a blow, therefore, that Ben Flis, secretary-general of the powerful National Liberation Front (FLN) -- which endured a major split in its ranks between Flis's supporters and Bouteflika's -- received only 6.42 per cent of the votes.

Ali Benflis, the FLN reformer obtained just under 8% of the votes, whilst Abdallah Djaballah, the moderate Islamist, and Saïd Sadi, the Kabyle democrat, obtained about 5% and 2% respectively.
In addition, Ali Benflis, Bouteflika’s former Prime Minister, also decided to join the presidential race on a platform of social and economic reforms, thus introducing an element of competition inside the nationalist camp.
In the end, the pre-electoral strategy of the ruling elite proved to be remarkably successful as it led to the non-participation of the main challengers of the status quo.

Samir Bousaadouna, 32, said he had taken the opportunity to cast a "protest vote" against the status quo he feels is represented by both Bouteflika and Benflis, in the hope that the election will go to a second round.
He voted for outsider Rebaine, who has pledged to beat corruption and reform the judicial system, under which Rebaine himself, as well as two other candidates, Hanoune and Sadi, have spent time behind bars.

Until recently, in addition to Ali Benflis, the secretary-general of the National Liberation Front (FLN), another nine high-profile individuals had announced they would run for the Algerian presidential election next April 8.
All have admitted that their efforts may lead nowhere because the incumbent president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, controls both the administrative apparatus that organizes and runs elections and the ability to allocate state funds to local municipalities whose support he seeks.
On Tuesday, however, the Constitutional Council rejected the candidacy of all but six contenders because they had not met the requirement of garnering 75,000 citizen signatures for their candidacies from 28 of the 48 wilayats, or governorships, or from 600 elected officials.
