U.S. kills 6 Al Qaeda suspects
A U.S. missile attack killed six suspected Al Qaeda terrorist operatives in Yemen, a U.S. official confirmed Monday, in what would be the first such American strike outside Afghanistan.
The missile fired Sunday, reportedly from a crewless Predator aircraft, hit a car carrying Ali Qaed Sinan al-Harthi, a suspected key terrorist organizer in Yemen, and five lower-level associates, the U.S. official confirmed.
Al-Harthi was believed to be a close associate of Al Qaeda leader and Sept. 11 mastermind Osama bin Laden and was instrumental, terrorist experts say, in the planning of the attack that killed 17 sailors on a U.S. Navy destroyer as it was anchored near the port city of Aden.

The London-based Arabic daily Al-Sharq al-Awsat reports that the FBI office in Yemen is now looking for Anwar Al Aulaqi, an American of Yemeni descent who was mentioned in Congress's report on the September 11 attacks for his ties to two of the hijackers -- Nawaf Al Hazmi and Khalid Al Mihdhar.
U.S. Marines are also training elite Yemeni forces to ferret out shadowy Al Qaeda elements, and, in late June and July, Yemeni forces arrested 37 militants in operations against the Islamic Army of Aden, a local group with known ties to Al Qaeda, in a village some 280 miles south of Sanaa.

TIME.com: Yemen Strike Opens New Chapter in War on Terror -- Page 1
The officially unacknowledged CIA missile strike that killed a key al-Qaeda leader on Sunday is a major tactical victory in the U.S. war on terrorism — a war whose rules and terms are quite unlike any America has ever known.
Indeed, the assassination by Predator drone of Ali Qaed Sinan al-Harthi in the wilds of northern Yemen encapsulates much about the new war — one of covert actions, sometimes in murky circumstances, designed to disrupt the terrorists' efforts to regroup far from erstwhile sanctuaries in Afghanistan.
Yemeni President Abdullah Ali Saleh has unambiguously chosen Washington's side in its war with al-Qaeda, arresting scores of al-Qaeda suspects — even, reportedly, bin Laden's youngest wife, 20-year-old Amal al-Saddah.
