Cashing in objective reporting for editorial commentary, CNN business reporter Ali Velshi and anchor Miles O’Brien rang in the November 16 edition of “American Morning” with a few swipes at Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE: WMT), the nation’s largest retailer and a favored target of labor unions.
Velshi made those comments in his report on potential 2008 Democratic presidential hopefuls John Edwards and Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) joining in a November 15 conference call with WakeUpWalMart.com, an anti-Wal-Mart group backed by labor unions.
What’s more, while Velshi’s story centered on Democrats like Edwards and Obama hoping to make Wal-Mart a political bogeyman, he neglected to remind viewers that a poll conducted before the midterm elections found voters had a distaste for politicians who made Wal-Mart a big campaign issue.

That’s what CNN’s Ali Velshi might as well have said in his August 30 story on “American Morning” in his weeklong series, “Red Tape and Rubble.” The CNN business reporter showed insurance claimants and attorneys suing insurance companies, but failed to include a spokesman from an insurance trade group.
Yet elsewhere in his story, Velshi admitted that one insurance company was unable to talk to Velshi about individual cases, exactly the topic of Velshi’s story: individual cases of frustrated insurance claimants.
What’s more, while Velshi’s featured hurricane victims may have legitimate complaints, the CNN reporter failed to note that these cases in the tiny minority of insurance claims, according to the III.

 'In the Money' Airs Conflict Diamond Hit Piece on De Beers
Velshi told viewers at the beginning of the program that they would hear the “dirty history” of some gems, calling diamonds “bling with strings attached.” His jokes probably fell on deaf ears at De Beers, one of the world’s largest diamond companies.
After accusing the company of monopolistic pricing policies, Velshi insinuated that the company had a hand in the brutal effects of “blood” or “conflict” diamonds.
Though comments allowed from a De Beers spokeswoman were brief, Velshi spoke at length with his guest, “hip hop mogul” Russell Simmons, founder of Simmons Jewelry Company.
