Alianza Summa is the 'umbrella denomination name' given to the integration of Avianca, SAM and Aces, three major Colombian airlines.
Alianza Summa, with an excellent and committed management and a front-line team, operates a 54-aircraft fleet, which flies to 23 domestic and 19 international destinations.
At the moment, Alianza Summa has 64 percent of the domestic market and 50 percent of the international market share from Colombia.

During 2002 a merger with Avianca took place: Alianza Summa became the new name for AVIANCA, SAM,& Aces (Colombia) with the aim to cooperate, to fight foreign competion and declining traffic.
Summa, made up by ACES, Avianca and the smaller SAM, was owned 50-50 by Colombia's National Coffee Federation and magnate Julio Mario Santo Domingo.
By 1976 further domestic services to smaller destinations were also being flown and DHC-6 Twin Otters were purchased for this operation.

(Medellin) (updated 5/27/02) is adding the Summa Alianza orange, green and blue butterfly logo on the tails of their aircraft (as seen on A320-200 VP-BVA) on a white background (the blue tails are being repainted white).
The aircraft all introduces a new livery which features a white fuselage and blue tail with the white circle tail logo.
Initially 6 737-200s will be transferred from the mainline fleet (it will grow to 20) (C-GMCP, msn 22864 will be the first to be painted).

Since Avianca, which is the country's flag carrier, ACES and the SAM airline came together under Alianza Summa 18 months ago, Avianca itself has filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States.
ACES (Aerolineas Centrales de Colombia- Colombia's second largest airline ACES has been grounded after shareholders decided to put the carrier into liquidation.
In a joint statement the shareholders said that they were not able to put the airline into bankruptcy under Colombian law as most of its debtors were in other countries.
