  Alias Season 4
Right in the first episode they have Vaughn say "last year sucked!" It was one of those air-clearing moments that lets you sit back and have fresh hope for a new season of quality viewing.
Season 4 was definitely better than Season 3.
With Season 4, it was more of an in-your-face power hit with pretty much no emotional depth at all.

But JJ Abrams knows what the shows about, his absence from the third season was felt amongst fans, but he knows that "Alias" is the soap opera for the under 50s, and its as sexy as it is satisfying.
She perhaps injected Alias with the sassy smart authority it still lacks; the absence of a fl actress in a modern television show actually is very noticeable - and "Alias" maybe needs some of the spice that is always attached to stereotypical fl female characters.
Alias is back to the silly fun that i had missed so much with more style than i knew television could provide.

Season 3 was too wrapped up in a love triangle and as a result was slightly dull and aimless.
Season 4 however remedied that with lots more action, a more assertive direction and re-introducing the formula that made it such a hit in the first place.
It was easily the best episode the show has had since the fantastic season two finale; In fact I'm pretty certain that everyone can agree this cliffhanger tops the "Mom?" shock value by a million times.

Alias episodes (Season 4) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike all other seasons of the series, the fourth season aired entirely during the latter half of the American television season, from its season debut on January 5, 2005 (U.S.) to its season finale on May 25.
A new night, new lead-in, and noticeable lack of weeks without new episode broadcasts are thought to have contributed to some of the series' best overall ratings during its five-season run.
This episode strongly resembles an episode of Danger Man entitled "Colony Three" in which John Drake infiltrates a Russian facility that simulates a British town.

 Alias Season 4 DVD review
Episode 1, “Authorized Personnel Only, Part 1”: The opening episode of the fourth season plays with time, dropping the viewer into what is essentially – and virtually literally – the cliffhanger of the episode.
Episode 14, “Nightingale”: The mysteries concerning Nadia and Vaughn’s father continue in this episode, which opens with a dream sequence in Chapter 1 that is spooky and attention-getting, to say the least.
Episode 22, “Before the Flood”: Although the show has taken on decidedly science-fiction elements at this time, the action stays believable purely through the raw and true emotions of the characters.

As Alias wraps up, the similarities between the final episodes of Alias and series creator JJ Abrams' other show, Lost leads one to believe that there may be some elements of Alias drawn into the Lost mythology.
In the season premiere episode, "Prophet Five," after learning that the man she has known as Michael Vaughn is under investigation and suspected of being a double agent, Sydney begins to question whether their business and personal relationship over the years had all been a lie.
This season, new agents will be introduced and a nefarious organization will come to light in Sydney's life as she fights to protect her unborn child -- all the while traveling incognito, outsmarting the bad guys and keeping the world safe.

Of course, as the season moves on, Rambaldi rears his ugly head, which gives the show a new focus and leads to one of the most bizarre (yet strangely satisfying) season finales I’ve seen in a long time.

Alias was definitely all over the map during its fourth season, and a few off-screen factors managed to take their toll onscreen as well.
This is how I felt when in the closing seconds of the season Vaughan revealed to Sydney that it was no accident that she had been sent to him in the first episode of the series and that his name was not Michael Vaughan.
And then, for the first half of the season, the episodes are completely self-contained (this was the first season in which every episode didn't begin with a "Previously" montage- in fact, very few episodes did this year).

This fourth season of 'Alias' is not the improvement on the third season that I was personally hoping for.
In episode 4- 'Welcome to Liberty Village' things take a turn for the better, it's not completely un-trodden ground in espionage territory, but in the hands of the Alias team it's magical stuff and the next handful of episodes continue in that same enjoyable vein.
Maybe if they had sold Alias as heavily from season 1 we wouldnt have been left with a less than 5 star season 4, and maybe season 5, currently showing in the states wouldnt be its last.

We start the season thinking he’s a Grade-A jerk, then we go back and forth with his loyalties for a little while and finally we discover that he’s extremely pained by the betrayal of his wife and regretful that he wasn’t ever able to get close to his daughter.
The final episode where he killed that Khasinau mole (seemingly based on his emotions for outing his daughter as a double agent) and the part where Will walked up to him and hugged him were extremely well acted.

Alias: Season 4 » Outside The Beltway | OTB
In the second view, “Alias,” whose fourth season has its two-hour premiere on ABC tonight, is nothing more than a pretentious comic strip: static, allegorical, a pleasure only to addicts, but also headache-inducingly difficult to criticize in these times when American comics have become, through male nostalgia and the canonization of the graphic novel, sacrosanct.

Almost every episode finds a reason to put Sydney (Garner) into a lingerie, bikini, or some other revealing outfit to show off her admittedly stunning beauty.
The artificiality and attempts at deliberate marketability of Alias sap it's potential emotional energy; consequently, it can be interesting, but the viewer never feels emotionally invested.
Despite it's potential, Alias (right now at least) is just something you might watch if you don't have anything else going on.
