  Alice Herz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alice Herz (1883 – March 26, 1965) is the first of eight Americans known to have immolated themselves in protest of the escalating Vietnam War, following the example of Buddhist monk Thích Quảng Đức.
Helga Herz later reapplied and was granted citizenship in 1954.
Herz wrote a last testament, which she distributed to several friends and fellow-activists before her death.

No matter how hazy Kennedy’s, Johnson’s, Nixon’s, or Bush’s understanding of that commandment was/is, it was crystal clear to Thich Quang Duc, Alice Herz, Norman Morrison, Roger LaPorte, George Winne, and all the others I don’t know about.
Those people could see something that no President to date has ever seen- the truth that war is immoral, that it is a crime, that it is murder.
Morrison, Herz, and LaPorte were so sure that the U.S. government was wrong that they killed themselves to protest against it.

In the weeks that were to follow, two other pacifists, Roger La Porte and Alice Herz, also immolated themselves in protest against the war.
The decision to introduce conscription for the war increased the level of protest, especially amongst young men.

Nearly all of them were sent to Auschwitz, and died there.
