Kurashige reviewed the reasons that the merchants in Little Tokyo originally conceived of Nisei Week and how some of those reasons changed through the years.
Milnes Kurashige, addressed the question, “Do racial minorities in the United States assimilate to American values and institutions, or do they retain ethnic ties and cultures?” Lon constructed this discussion through a review of the history of Nisei Week.
Following the closing of the service, Lon Kurashige, history professor at USC and one of our Dharma School parents, discussed his research on Nikkei generations pertaining to Japanese American celebrations and conflicts.
