He based the central character on Alice herself, and wove into the story many of the places and things which they'd seen on their outings in Oxford.
Alice asked him to write it down, and the story became "Alices' Adventures Underground", then "Alices' Adventures in Wonderland".
The title is often shortened to "Alice In Wonderland".

 Alice in Wonderland
Alice was not a bit hurt, and she jumped up on to her feet in a moment: she looked up, but it was all dark overhead; before her was another long passage, and the White Rabbit was still in sight, hurrying down it.
Alice had no idea what to do, and in despair she put her hand in her pocket, and pulled out a box of comfits, (luckily the salt water had not got into it), and handed them round as prizes.
Alice thought the whole thing very absurd, but they all looked so grave that she did not dare to laugh; and, as she could not think of anything to say, she simply bowed, and took the thimble, looking as solemn as she could.

Alice and those pleasantly mad companions of her trips in Wonderland and through the Looking-Glass are now busy entertaining youngsters, and those who would like to be, in 225 theatres in this country and Canada, including the Paramount of this city.
In the initial stages of the film, Alice is eager to get out in the snow, and as the time passes and the world becomes unreal, she finds herself visiting the looking-glass room, where the clock has an insolent fashion of booming out the hour.

Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Alice in Wonderland
He considered it to lack sympathetic characters, such as Alice herself (unrelated to the Alice from early in Disney's career), who wasn't very likable in Lewis Carroll's 1865 story, either, or in its 1872 sequel.
It may be that the problems with Disney's Alice in Wonderland stem mostly from the fact that Disney and Carroll were both creative geniuses whose works strongly represent their own sensibilities, and any given story generally has room for only one.
Later cartoon adaptations of Carroll's Alice include a comic book in the Classics Illustrated Junior series, which is still traded in the collector market, and a 1966 Hanna-Barbera TV cartoon special, which critics don't seem to have liked very much.

Alice began to feel very uneasy: to be sure, she had not as yet had any dispute with the Queen, but she knew that it might happen any minute, ‘and then,’ thought she, ‘what would become of me? They're dreadfully fond of beheading people here; the great wonder is, that there's any one left alive!’
Alice thought she might as well go back, and see how the game was going on, as she heard the Queen's voice in the distance, screaming with passion.
The moment Alice appeared, she was appealed to by all three to settle the question, and they repeated their arguments to her, though, as they all spoke at once, she found it very hard indeed to make out exactly what they said.

"It doesn't matter a bit," Alice says, and again, "I don't believe there's an atom of meaning in it." Soon afterward, she takes charge of the situation and "stands up for herself." In the eyes of many critics and readers of Alice, this assertion/growing is the meaning of the story.

Michael Sirotta's Alice in Wonderland is a children's musical/operetta based on Lewis Carroll's well known dream-adventure novella.
The score to Alice has been digitally orchestrated using symphonic, guitar, and percussion samples, as well as exotic synthesized sound which enhances the story's magical aura. All the musical arrangements are available in digital formats (such as mp3's) or as CD's, providing a ready-made accompaniment for performances and rehearsals.
Employment of a musical director or a person with a strong musical background is recommended for the rehearsal process, since the music is substanitive and replete with choral harmony parts in the ensemble numbers (children who can sing can usually manage the harmonies with adequate coaching).

Once she's tumbled in it's too late to turn back, and Alice finds Wonderland not only as nonsensical and fantastical as she could have hoped, but frustrating and perplexing as well.
Carroll originally told the story to Alice herself while on an outing on July 4, 1882, a day that is considered as important to the history of English literature as that date is to American history.
Kathryn Beaumont, the young actress who voiced and modeled for Alice (as well as Wendy in "Peter Pan"), spent the majority of two years at the Disney Studios, even going to school on the lot, so she could be on-call for the duration of production.

Similarly, in one of the film's most hilarious moments, Frog Footman (played deliciously by John Bird) assists Alice's efforts to get through one of her many doors, by offering to do "nothing at all." The Footman expounds at length on what that means, while Alice yawns with ceaseless boredom.
In his assured hands, Alice in Wonderland is not merely a fantastical tale of caterpillars, mice, and bloodthirsty queens looking to take off some heads.
Alice observes to the Footman in Carroll's version, "The way creatures argue" -- that is, converse, debate, quarrel, and communicate -- "is enough to drive one crazy." Miller's excellent rendering of Alice's long, strange trip into the world of adults is made even stranger by Ravi Shankar's trance-inducing sitar soundtrack.

Although reality in the Alice story sometimes seems like the reality we experience when we’re fully conscious, more often the reality in the story is more similar to experiences we have in dreams.

Alice replied, rather shyly, `I--I hardly know, sir, just at present-- at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.'
Alice thought she had never seen such a curious croquet-ground in her life; it was all ridges and furrows; the balls were live hedgehogs, the mallets live flamingoes, and the soldiers had to double themselves up and to stand on their hands and feet, to make the arches.
The players all played at once without waiting for turns, quarrelling all the while, and fighting for the hedgehogs; and in a very short time the Queen was in a furious passion, and went stamping about, and shouting `Off with his head!' or `Off with her head!' about once in a minute.
