It is not one movie, but all movies, thus falling perfectly under egghead Umberto Eco's definition of a cult movie.
But the plot device in the first Alien movie is one that has been done the year before by Jamie Lee Curtis in Carpenter's Halloween horror movie and every subsequent slasher movie from Friday the 13th to Nightmare on Elm Street.
Add to this stunning special effects and an alien brought to life by special effects wiz Carlos Rambaldi (who later designed E.T. brooding music by Jerry Goldsmith (Oscar winner for The Omen) and it is not difficult to see why the movie has achieved both the cult status and box office success it did.

Alien: The Director's Cut Movie Review - Alien: The Director's Cut Movie Trailer - The Boston Globe
Ridley Scott's 1979 "Alien" is remembered as the film that not only fused the sci-fi of "Star Wars" with the splatter of "Halloween" but that helped launch the careers of Sigourney Weaver and, ultimately, directors James Cameron and David Fincher, who both oversaw controversial sequels.
This critic still thinks Cameron's 1986 "Aliens" is the superior film (not to mention one of the best pure action movies of all time), but at the very least Scott has reset the stage for endless film-geek arguments.
One of the real pleasures of revisiting "Alien" is to watch the emergence of both Ellen Ripley as a character and Sigourney Weaver as a star.

ALIEN received mixed reviews when it debuted in 1979--largely from science fiction critics, who accused it of being little more than a sort of "Friday the 13th in Outer Space," a blood-and-gore horror flick given a futuristic twist via some problematic special effects.
In Alien, the terror begins when the crew of the spaceship Nostromo are instructed to investigate a transmission from a desolate planet, as they are on their way back home to Earth.
The alien is now on board the spaceship after it exploded through the stomach of one of the spaceship's crew, all because the remaining crew foolishly let him back on board.

After the military's scientists extract the alien from Ripley's chest, we discover that the green-fingernailed, unusually strong Ripley is not entirely human herself.
After making their macabre delivery, they are forced to delay their departure, so that when the cloned aliens break loose--as you know they will--the group is caught in the carnage.
Ripley was a fairly typical horror-film heroine in the first Alien movie, but with each successive film Weaver has broadened and deepened her character.

But hey, if I take for granted that an alien gem housing the DNA blueprint to develop a new life form was sent to Earth for mankind to create, well, the ending to this movie might not be as far fetched and tidy as it seems.
I mean, in more movies than I could even count, the director likes to keep the "thing" of the film lurking in the shadows and more than often refuses to give the audience a good view of it until the very end of the movie.

The fourth film, Alien Resurrection clearly illustrated this: it was an uneasy blend between the horror elements of Alien and the action of Aliens.
In the end the movie version of Starship Troopers proved to be a better variation of old themes and would have been a better Alien movie than either Alien 3 or Alien Resurrection.

 MOVIE REVIEW_AVP Alien Vs. Predator
Casting one's senses back to those heady days of the original movies, we remember that our enjoyment was piqued precisely because their antagonists were inexplicable; they were truly… "alien"; i.e.
The movie rationalizes, sensibly, that the Predators only try to kill our human B-actors to re-acquire what was theirs in the first place – their weapons.
Which puts paid to the movie's tag-line, "Whoever wins – we lose." Well, not exactly, for the Predators are portrayed as "good guy" sentinels keeping the roistering Aliens at bay… So only if the PREDATORS lose, we lose.

Movies are feature-length live-action or animated visual entertainments, usually first shown in theaters and then later released in portable video formats such as videotapes and DVDs.
Movies provide scope for grand, and grandly-imagined adventures in strange and exotic worlds with aliens, monsters, dragons and so on, many of which exotic creations are produced by the use of trick photography and visual effects of various kinds, including, lately, much Computer-Generated Imagery or CGI.
Movies tell stories primarily via pictures and action and often use words as a secondary element in the narrative.

1979 Alien - Movie reviews, trailers, clips and stills
ALIEN has been hailed by critics and audiences worldwide as a seminal work of the genre.
Alien came at a good time in American cinema, when studios were spending big bucks to ramp up the old genre films and make new epics out of them; what West Side Story did for musicals and The Godfather did for gangster films, Alien (along with The Exorcist) did for horror films.
It may or may not be the scariest movie ever made, but it's a damn sight scarier than that awful Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake.

MovieFreak.Com - "Alien" Movie Review by Sara M. Fetters
Where other movies seems to date almost before they leave the multiplex, Ridley Scott’s masterpiece of fright “Alien” holds up as the real deal in screen screams, a Halloween treat for everyone looking to spend some quality time in a darkened theater.
But all is not well as it quickly becomes apparent that the alien creature was using the man as a host, its offspring bursting forth from his chest during dinner (a moment in film history actor John Hurt will never be able to live down).
It was a pure delight to see the film in a theater – unfortunately for the first time I have to add, I was far too young to see it the first time around – and I can’t wait to head out and see it once again.

 AboutFilm.Com - Alien (1979)
Alien shows inklings of the dark cyberpunk vision of the future (popularized in the 1980s and 90s) that director Ridley Scott would go on to realize more fully in Blade Runner three years later.
Indeed, the alien is an impressive piece of machinery—from its metallic color, to the corrosive acid running through its veins, to its multiple sets of powerful jaws.
Alien is more nerve-wrackingly terrifying than any of its sequels, and Scott did it with only one creature and inferior special effects.

 Alien Review by Shelby Sherman
By the end of the movie Ripley has demonstrated that she has some “balls” even though we see that she is all female when we are treated to just one glimpse of her barely pantied mons in what was the only scene in the movie that could be considered marginally erotic.
From the terrifying sets to the even more terrifying Alien, with a very sinister elongated head replete with rows of smashing teeth, the viewer is uneasy and usually scared shitless, time and time again.
My preferred ending is for the Alien to fall madly in love with Ripley, skull-fuck her (an amorous adventure that she unfortunately will not survive) and to direct the craft to The White House, where he again falls madly in love with First Lady Rosanne Carter.

Alien, the landmark 1979 film, is proof positive that some days you should just stay in bed.
It is in fact this lack of certainty that makes "Alien" work so well, for as the film hits it second half it shifts dramatically from slow space road movie to an intergalactic haunted house fright show.
It may be a better movie, but the original remains a quality stand alone film and a landmark in the sci-fi horror sub genre that has not been matched by any other saga.

 Alien - Movie Rental Review
Kids like scary movies, and trying to keep them away from ALIEN is like trying to discourage them from visiting the top neighborhood Halloween haunted house.
ALIEN did defy stereotypes of its time in the brilliant move of making the ultimate survivor a vulnerable-looking young woman, Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), who in the intense finale is literally paralyzed with terror, yet manages to fight back against the alien marauder.
Recently Fox released a 25th-annivesary edition of ALIEN, with a few minutes of restored footage of what the alien does with captured prey -- stuff that was once considered too grim for 1979, but no surprise for anyone who saw the sequel ALIENS, or any of the later followups.

Alien Movie Review, DVD Release - Filmcritic.com
Alien, first released in 1979 and in theaters right now, has stood the test of time remarkably well.
The beautiful and ballsy Weaver is a heroine for all seasons, the movie is suspenseful in all the right spots and it plays beautifully on the big screen with big sound.
The alien looks toothy and formidable, and Scott widely chooses never to show the whole image, taking the “scared by what we can’t see maxim” to the hilt.

 Alien Movie Review - MovieWeb
The story that Alien tells deals with a small group of miners, who are woken from suspended animation after their ship receives an SOS distress call from an unknown origin.
After an accident in the depths of this ship the crew decide to leave the planetoid, but they soon find that their journey home takes a terrifying twist as a killer Alien, the likes of which no human has ever seen, begins to stalk the crew, picking them off one by one.
It's an important scene though that again subtly hints at the true nature of the Aliens, but was removed after the studio's decided that the implications were just too disturbing, for a 70's audience anyway.

Alien Review Movie Review Film Alien: Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John ...
The movie is a cross-section of golden horror oldies and the far-off futuristic space setting of the science fiction genre.
Just as the teen horror movies of the late 70's and early 80's were beginning to take form, jump tactics like those found in the moribund "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th" franchises were quickly becoming the rage, as well as cliched.
If there's one thing the movie suffers from, it's a lack of character development, and how many horror movies are guilty of this is perhaps a question for the ages.
