Alien hand syndrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A distinct "posterior" form of alien hand syndrome is associated with damage to the parietal lobe and/or occipital lobe of the brain.
Alien movements in the posterior form of the syndrome also tend to be less coordinated and show a coarse ataxic motion that is generally not observed in the frontal form of the condition.
Alien hand movement in the posterior form may show a typical posture, sometimes referred to as a 'parietal hand' or 'instinctive avoidance reaction' (a term introduced by neurologist Derek Denny-Brown), in which the digits move into a fully extended position and the palmar surface is pulled back away from approaching objects.

Movement abnormalities consistent with alien hand were described in two of the first three patients with CBD originally reported by Rebeiz et al [37] When the first patient used her right hand for objects on her left side the left hand would join in.
Alien hand cases do not speak directly to this fundamental problem since the unwilled, unintentional acts do not occur on their own, but are part of another, usually greater willed act.

Alien hand syndrome definition - Medical Dictionary definitions of popular medical terms
Alien hand syndrome: The feeling that one's hand is possessed by a force outside of ones control.
The syndrome typically arises after trauma to the brain, after brain surgery or after a stroke or an infection of the brain.
A person with the alien hand syndrome can feel sensation in the affected hand but thinks that the hand is not part of their body and that they have no control over its movement, that it belongs to an alien.

The alien hand syndrome was originally used to describe cases involving the anterior part of corpus callosal lesions (split-brain person) producing involuntary or contradictive movements and a concomitant inability to distinguish the affected hand from an examiner′s hand when these were placed in the patient′s unaffected hand.
This patient and other examples suggest that the alien hand syndrome may not only be as closely associated with focal, critical lesion sites as its callosal and callosal-frontal counterparts, but also with the temporal-parietal-occipital region as well as with the single temporal or single parietal region in the dominant cerebral hemisphere.

'Alien Hand' Syndrome Turns Limbs Monstrous
Writing in the February issue of the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry, the Israeli team describes a case of 'alien hand' associated with a possible case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a degenerative brain disorder caused by infectious particles called prions.
In one case, ``the alien limb performed complex actions such as unbuttoning (the patient's) blouse and removing a hair pin.'' In another, a woman found herself ``powerless'' to prevent her hand from repeatedly touching her eyes and mouth.
The study authors note that one common factor between the diseases associated with the phenomenon is that all these disorders involve several parts of the brain at once, suggesting that simultaneous damage to the parts of the brain that control movement may be responsible.

Alien Hand Syndrome has been most widely documented in cases where sufferers of epilepsy and seizures have had the two hemispheres of their brains separated to relieve the problems they suffer.

Re: Is the alien hand syndrome something that still goes on today?
This is a rare condition that can effect either hands or limbs, but it is most commonly a problem with the hands.
In some cases, the alien limb performs complex behaviors such as unbuttoning a garment or removing a hair pin, but these are usually associated with brain tumors, aneurysm or stroke.
One seemingly common factor between all of the causes for AHS is that all of these disorders involve several parts of the brain at once, suggesting that simultaneous damage to the parts of the brain that control movement may be responsible.

What has been left (relatively) unexplored is the familiar narrative in which the hands of an executed killer are grafted onto the arms of an innocent man and assume a life of their own, faithful to the murderous inclinations of their previous owner and impervious to the will of their new master.
Gogol secretly replaces Orlac's crushed hands with the hands of a recently guillotined knife-thrower named Rollo (Edward Brophy), who was put to death for murdering his own father in a crime of passion.
The patient first feels estranged from the alien hand, protesting that it isn't even familiar, isn't theirs at all really, that it must belong to someone else, and then later comes to personify it, treating the hand as an independent being with its own authority rather than as one of their own limbs at all.

It is known as 'alien hand' syndrome, and individuals with the condition find that they are not always in control of one of their hands.
The interesting bit is that during these episodes, the hand does not lie there limply at their side, but rather goes off on its own, either ignoring what the rest of the body is doing or actively working against it.
Sufferers tell of the 'alien' hand grabbing their other arm to stop them from bringing a fork to their mouth, slamming a door on them to stop them from entering or leaving a room or building, or even attempting to steer their car off the road.

An individual with this neurological disorder has full sensation in the rogue hand, but is unable to control its movements, and does not feel that it is a part of their body.
When the condition is brought about by a brain tumor, aneurysm, or a stroke, the alien hand may also engage in complex purposeful behavior, such as compulsive manipulation of tools, undoing buttons, or tearing clothes.
Sometimes the sufferer is completely unaware of what the hand is doing until it is brought to his or her attention, or until they happen to see it themselves.
