Alien hand syndrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A distinct "posterior" form of alien hand syndrome is associated with damage to the parietal lobe and/or occipital lobe of the brain.
Alien movements in the posterior form of the syndrome also tend to be less coordinated and show a coarse ataxic motion that is generally not observed in the frontal form of the condition.
The alien limb in the posterior form of the syndrome may be seen to 'levitate' upward and away from contact surfaces.

 Hardcore Gaming 101: Alien Syndrome
Sega’s Alien Syndrome is pretty clearly a rip on Aliens, since Konami had the actual license to the movie (and made their own suitable arcade entry.)
Although Alien Syndrome is a typical overhead, character based shooter, it's a pretty far stretch from linear games like Commando.
After disappearing for approximately fifteen years, Sega resurrected Alien Syndrome for their Sega Ages 2500 series, which appeared in the US in the Sega Classics Collection, but was oddly absent from the European release.

The syndrome typically arises after trauma to the brain, after brain surgery or after a stroke or an infection of the brain.
A person with the alien hand syndrome can feel sensation in the affected hand but thinks that the hand is not part of their body and that they have no control over its movement, that it belongs to an alien.

CLINIC STUDIES ALIEN ABDUCTION SYNDROME   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
These alien abductees, as they came to be known, reported being "taken" by UFOs/aliens mostly at night, during sleep, many times with the abductee being taken from their very bed and returned once the aliens had finished with them.
As such, people who have physical complaints referable to what they believe is an alien abduction experience are a group of people largely marginalized not only by society but by the medical establishment in general, with their complaints of real, physical phenomena left largely unstudied and, therefore, untreated.
The alien abductee sleep clinic research study was born out of work started 25 years ago when Dr. Uhde was studying what was loosely termed mood and anxiety disorders.

Re: Is the alien hand syndrome something that still goes on today?
It appears that the problem is a lack of communication between the two hemispheres of the brain.
In some cases, the alien limb performs complex behaviors such as unbuttoning a garment or removing a hair pin, but these are usually associated with brain tumors, aneurysm or stroke.
One seemingly common factor between all of the causes for AHS is that all of these disorders involve several parts of the brain at once, suggesting that simultaneous damage to the parts of the brain that control movement may be responsible.

Writing in the February issue of the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry, the Israeli team describes a case of 'alien hand' associated with a possible case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a degenerative brain disorder caused by infectious particles called prions.
And the authors note that more complex alien hand movements -- such as unbuttoning or tearing of clothes -- are usually associated with brain tumors, aneurysm or stroke.

There are many scientific papers that have dealt with the disorder known as Alien Hand Syndrome although there is very little that has been published on The Web.
Alien Hand Syndrome has been most widely documented in cases where sufferers of epilepsy and seizures have had the two hemispheres of their brains separated to relieve the problems they suffer.
As a by-product of such a separation, many patients find that, quite literally, their left hand does not know what their right hand is doing.

Damn Interesting » Alien Hand Syndrome
When the condition is brought about by a brain tumor, aneurysm, or a stroke, the alien hand may also engage in complex purposeful behavior, such as compulsive manipulation of tools, undoing buttons, or tearing clothes.
Sometimes the sufferer is completely unaware of what the hand is doing until it is brought to his or her attention, or until they happen to see it themselves.
That would explain why the alien hand would be capable in intelligent, complex behavior; why it would be independent of the dominant personality; and why it would try to strangle the body.
