Alien Resurrection Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
But, it's not that far removed from Aliens as a prime cut of Hollywood action cum sci-fi horror, and unlike Aliens, Alien Resurrection retains much of Alien's atmosphere, making Sigourney Weaver right in her claim that it plays a bit like a genetic splicing of the first two films, which is appropriate.
As with the other films, Alien Resurrection is a sequel that picks up the story in the same universe, with the same history as the earlier films-it's a continuation of the same plot.
Alien Resurrection is also intriguing in that the `big bad corporation'-or, its equivalent here, the military-finally gets a hold of their Holy Grail of future weaponry, the aliens.

 Alien: Resurrection
Alien: Resurrection (1997) is the fourth film in the Alien series, preceded by Alien, Aliens and Alien³.
She also has somewhat of an empathy for the aliens, refering to them as "my babies." At the end of the film, it is shown that the alien queen has also received a gift from Ripley's DNA: the ability to give birth to live offspring directly.
H.R. Giger, the artist famous for creating the original alien design, was openly displeased that the film did not give him a credit for this and sent a letter to the studio complaining.

At the beginning of Alien Resurrection, 200 years after the events of Alien3, we find that Ripley has been cloned by the military using DNA patterns recovered from her remains.
They have done this because her DNA also includes the pattern of the baby alien queen that was gestating in her chest.
After the military's scientists extract the alien from Ripley's chest, we discover that the green-fingernailed, unusually strong Ripley is not entirely human herself.

Anyway, the film works best in the first third, as even though we've all seen the aliens before, the film does a good job with playing around with their insatiable bloodthirst, and the "taming of the alien" scene featuring dependable genre stalwart Brad Dourif is great fun.
Ironically, though I think ALIEN Resurrection is the weakest in the series, it has the best transfer of any of the discs.
Like all the other ALIEN films, it is a dark and muted film visually, though I thought the crimson, blue and green colors scheme had the most impressive balance between color and grime, saturation and a monochromatic texture.

That installment was as grimly existential as James Cameron's "Aliens," with its operatic inter-species bitchfighting, was baroque: "Alien" as envisioned by Beckett.
Like all "Alien" films, it's a haunted-house story, with Ripley and her companions fleeing the nasties through the labyrinthine corridors of a space station and devising a scheme to exterminate a litter of the creatures bred by the usual team of foolish, cocksure scientists.
Once the aliens escape from their cages and begin their inevitable rampage, "Alien Resurrection" careens through a series of exciting, well-executed action sequences and Jeunet goes hog wild with the franchise's underlying psychosexual symbolism.

Alien: Resurrection (1997) with Sigourney Weaver, Winona Ryder
Now an unsettled mix of human and alien, she sees the human world with a mixture of pity and contempt, and the primal power of her alien side represents a seductive lure: the urge, I think, to fully surrender to your own desires, to divest yourself of conscience.
The real truth is that Ryder doesn't belong here: she has none of the edge needed to make the character believable, and Call ends up reminding you less of a hardened smuggler than of a college sophomore who signs up for a summer of shoveling fish guts in Alaska to gather material for poems.
Ripley's customary rage is tempered not just by her newfound empathy for the aliens but by her being responsible for their very existence; as she points out, "I'm the monster's mother." In that sense, ALIEN: RESURRECTION promises a bright future for the franchise.

Their plan is to breed and domesticate the aliens for military and scientific use, proof once again that hundreds of years and all the technology in the world haven’t made people one lick smarter.
In Resurrection, Ripley continues to struggle with the implications of her rape by the creature in Alien3, but now has the added dilemma of discovering herself after having died and been brought back as the most successful in a series of cloning attempts.
This habit of identifying with the aliens does work to good advantage, however, in the movie’s final act, when a new alien makes its appearance – one that is, in a way, more frightening than all the others because it is the most human.

The experimentation with the Alien shows that it is smarter than humans give it credit it for, as is shown in their ability in former movies to cut the lights to buildings, and even shows a somewhat mean streak in their ways of playing.
With "Alien Resurrection" I would still say that it is probably the worst of the four movies but it still, in my opinion, garners four stars for its originality and the way in which they brought Ripley back.

But the resurrected Ripley is full of surprises for her creators, as are the aliens.
One thing I think people forget when they attack later Alien films in comparison with the first two is just how hard it must be for these directors to create something new while they still stick within the accepted Alien universe; fickle Alien-philes want it to be the same and different all at once.
Alien Resurrection appears in an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 on this single-sided, dual-layered DVD; the image has been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.

The success of Ridley Scott’s Alien, a ground-breaking leap in science fiction filmmaking, and James Cameron’s Aliens, opened the door to a series of lackluster sequels which are barely worth the film they are printed on.
Jerry Goldsmith’s visceral Alien (which can be heard in its complete form on the recent 20th anniversary DVD from Fox) and James Horner’s Khan-esque Aliens were both solid scores which strengthened the films they accompanied.

Alien: Resurrection, the fourth entry in the franchise, is directed by French stylist Jean-Pierre Jeunet in a much more straightforward action-adventure manner than its predecessor, the dark and confusing Alien 3.
The revelation that the cloned Ripley is an alien /human hybrid is a nice twist given their symbiosis throughout the series but the switching of her maternal instincts to the alien offspring is a step too far.
Then we are thrust in to the baffling scene with the mother alien and the "baby" alien a monster that risks prompting guffaws rather than the awed horror the aliens ususally produce.

Certainly Alien Resurrection film (directed by French stylist Jean-Pierre Jeunet) is an improvement on Alien 3, with a script that breathes exciting new life into the franchise.
As a sequel to the Alien trilogy, the general consensus is that 'Alien Resurrection' scrapes the bottom of the barrel.
In 'Resurrection' we are blasted with endless amounts of explosions and gore, the only tinge of humanity coming from an androyid (ironically played by the rather 'wooden' Winona Ryder).

Ellen Ripley's DNA has been successfully recovered and a mix of Ripley and the alien's DNA have been successfully cloned and now Ripley's 'descendant', actually a clone of her has been brought to life to wage her final battle against the predatory aliens that are now approaching the planet Earth.
I think that "Resurrection" is slightly better than "Alien 3", but I also think that we all agree that both "Resurrection" and "Alien 3" aren't even close to the level of excellency of the first two movies.
As a sequel to the Alien trilogy, the general consensus is that 'Alien Resurrection' scraps the bottom of the barrel.

Not long after the first aliens are hatched, the overconfidence of off-kilter USM scientist Gedimen (Brad Dourif, whose managed to play an off-kilter serial killer on every major sci-fi series-- "The X-Files", "Voyager", and "Babylon 5") allows the aliens to escape captivity.
If you recall in "Aliens", the theme of motherhood was central to the story and Ripley agonized with the fact that her daughter had grown up and died while she was in deep space.
In "Alien Resurrection", Ripley's drive is muddled and the scenes that are meant to convey her newfound internal conflict come out flat, almost laughable (such as her confrontation with the alien queen and the cheesy 'birth' of the new Alien species).

 SPLICEDwire | "Alien Resurrection" review
That must have been some coercion because "Alien Resurrection" is one of those rotten sci-fi/horror movies in which nonsense abounds, to the point that shipboard emergencies are signaled by the onset of strobe lights -- ever so helpful when one needs to see what one is running away from.
Ripley, who killed herself at the end of the last "Alien" movie because she was carrying a chest-bursting E.T. embryo in her innards, returns here as a genetically engineered Super Ripley.
What makes "Resurrection" such a disaster (honestly, it rivals "Alien3"), is that it constantly flies in the face of common sense without being entertaining enough to forgive its follies.

After the dissapointing and disturbingly depressing plot of the 3rd movie, I was hoping Resurection would shine a little light on the Alien movies and bring things back into perspective that just dissapeared along with Ripley when she dove into that pool of lava like fluid at the end of A3.
Alien Resurection could have been a great movie...but, the sloppy script, almost comedicly gory deaths (That scene with Dan Hedaya pulling a peice of flesh off the back of his head), glossy cinematograpy, bogus computer animation, and bad acting just ruin this movie.

Since it wouldn't be an ALIEN film without Sigourney Weaver, a story had to be created that would bring her back to life.
It would've been a better plot twist if the aliens used her against the others, forcing her to choose between her alien blood and her human persona.
Since we're already quite familiar with the aliens modus operandi – popping out from the ceiling, etc., etc. – the film is missing the scare-factor of the other versions in the series.
