The sculpture of indeterminacy: Alison Knowles's beans and variations Art Journal - Find Articles
As Alison Knowles stood with her assistants before an audience of more than a hundred people, preparing to perform her renowned 1962 score Make a Salad at the Baltimore Museum of Art in fall 2003, there was an air of uncertainty as to how this now "historical" piece would be understood.
Before a vast audience (by 1962 standards) and on the grounds of a major visual-arts institution as opposed to in a concert hall, the sense that this was a musical piece extending the boundaries of composition seemed to require particular emphasis.
Knowles sensed the value of bracketing her own music of chopping, pouring, and tossing with conventional musical performances (selections from Mozart were chosen and a cellist and a violinist played their pieces before and after Knowles's performance).

Karl Young review of Alison Knowles "Spoken Texts"
Knowles' clear and steady delivery of text confirms the clear and steady nature of the text.
Although Knowles has worked in many genres, she is probably best known for her performance art, particularly in the context of Fluxus.
But the ease with which Knowles works with both sources shows how compatible her approach to art and life is with 19th Century American quietism and ancient Chinese nature mysticism.

Bagatellen: Alison Knowles/Taketo Shimada - Fluxsweet
This disc presents five pieces by Alison Knowles, veteran of the Fluxus group, on both CD and DVD (the disc including an additional performance of one of the pieces by Tim Barnes, not seen on the DVD).
Knowles is wrapped in a length of white freeze paper, strung with tape around her body, eyes and mouth and then receives a haircut with amplified scissors and razor in “Danger Music #2”, the clipping and buzzing sounds augmented electronically.
Not that it’s necessarily Knowles’ prime concern, but Barnes understands more about space and texture than anyone else present at the other performance and, given that this is after all a CD release, the listener is thankful.

Knowles' acceptance, and indeed desire, for chance and randomness is exemplified by the arbitrary numbering and naming of her works and the gradual disintegration of those made of delicate natural fiber papers.
When she uses a frame--as in a hat, shirt and pants embedded in white paper pulp--it is as a structural device rather than as an enclosure for the work.
Knowles broke new ground during the lively years of the early l960s as one of the founders of Fluxus.

Alison Knowles's latest show, "Footnotes," compiled relics from the past 30 years of the Fluxus artist's life--ranging from dried pig ears, rubber gloves and shoe parts to a muslin bag, denim scraps and bits of journal pages.
She arranged these and other items into still lifes, tableaux and wall pieces that together formed what she calls an "environment." On the whole, its ambience struck me as rather Out of Africa-esque (thanks to a banana, earth tones, straw and shipping labels).
Because of paper's link to books, she often uses it as a medium, pressing two dimensions into the service of three.

Dette ved at lade tingene indgå i sammenhænge, de normalt ikke forekommer, og ved allerede i invitiationen at bede publikum om at bidrage med en lille blå genstand.
