Mr Darling told MPs that the lost data was the responsibility of a junior HMRC official in the north-east who had "clearly not followed" strict rules.

BBC Online - On The Record - Interviews
ALISTAIR DARLING MP: No, my starting point is that the Welfare State in its present form, which was essentially designed some fifty years ago for the world of post-war Britain, needs to be changed to take account of modern conditions.
DARLING: Yes, you will because as I set out in the speech I gave earlier this week, the role of the Welfare State has got to change away from simply passively reacting to problems, paying out benefits without dealing with the underlying causes of these benefits having to be paid out.
DARLING: Well, it relates to the pilot project, and remember they were fairly limited, but if you were to reflect that those people on the pilots who went into work across the country, that would equivalent to something like a hundred thousand lone parents going into work.

Alistair Darling is truckers' darling [The Rockall Times]
The massive road building programme announced by transport secretary Alistair Darling last week will be wonderful in every way and allow for a new generation of supertrucks, we can reveal.
With a large number of roads facing expansion to eight lanes either side, the trucks will be able to pass one another at half-a-mile-an-hour while leaving two lanes for weaving Cavalier drivers and modern-day missionaries intent on making everyone drive at exactly 70 miles-per-hour.
Mr Darling also welcomed suggestions that a tax on road driving rather than expensive road building would be the best way forward to tackle Britain's congestion.

 Alistair Darling - Nuclear Spin
Acccording to a BBC profile, Darling “is regarded as one of Tony Blair's most trusted colleagues, despite keeping a foot firmly in the Gordon Brown camp”.
On July 11, 2006, Alistair Darling, the Trade and Industry Secretary, gave the green light to a new generation of nuclear power plants, saying that nuclear power would make a "significant contribution" to cutting carbon emissions and Britain's energy needs.
Darling's insistence on keeping the nuclear option "on the table", whilst ruling out reliance on renewable sources as "populist and simplistic", is a far cry from his views when he was transport chair of Lothian regional council back in June 1986.

One of the most bizarre aspects of transport under “new” Labour is that the Scottish secretary (Alistair Darling) controls railways in England (where he’s also the transport secretary) but not in Scotland where rail comes under the control of the Scottish Executive.
Darling also stopped the long-standing grants for switching freight from road to rail, but only in England, meanwhile Scotland has spent millions on new facilities and is restoring a disused railway to relieve the Forth bridge.
Interesting fact: Since Edinburgh Central MP Alistair Darling became England transport secretary, three rail stations have opened in Edinburgh (population 450,000), one in England (pop 49.1m) and none in Wales (pop 2.9m).
