Cragg had an outstanding college career with the University of Arkansas under coach John McDonnell, winning individual NCAA titles at 3,000m, 5,000m and 10,000m on the track, as well as cross country and indoor titles.
Cragg declared for Ireland in 2003 having represented South Africa as a junior athlete in a cross country race.

Update: The IAAF hasn't corrected their website yet, but the managers for both Boniface Kiprop and Alistair Cragg have verified that Kiprop was the man who finished fifth in the Gaz de France 5000m in 12:57.60, a Ugandan national record, and not Cragg, who did not finish the race.

Alistair Cragg of Ireland took the lead after 3km for a minute and a half over Abraham Chebii, Bekele, El Guerrouj, Gebremariam, and Mottram.
At this point the order was Chebii, Bekele, Cragg, El Guerrouj, and Gebremariam as Bekele took over the lead immediately after the 4km mark.
With a lap to go those six were in the front group along with Hicham Bellani of Morocco and Samir Moussaoui of Algeria as a pack of eight had a slight gap on the field.
