In a country whose national identity is tied as much to rugby as it is to the backyard barbecue and the tumbledown bach, the loss of the nation's future All Blacks to a rival code could be a very big deal.
Also running in soccer's favour is the critical influence of the guiding mums, for whom the earlier maturation of Maori and Pacific Island kids is a real concern in a heavy-contact sport such as rugby.
MacGowan puts rugby's ascendancy in the 17-plus group (where all sports experience a marked drop-oll in player numbers) down to New Zealanders seeing their rugby team compete well against top opposition.

If Alistair Macgowan is in it he could stand behind David Baddiel doing an impression of everything he does in the whole show.

Some of the supporting cast don't have much to do.
Starsky and Hutch reminded me of one of those TV impressionist sketches, like Alistair MacGowan’s Royle Family or Stella Street, where the accuracy of the impression is irrelevant, and the comedy comes instead from the juxtaposition of recognisable characters in surprising settings.
Starsky and Hutch the movie is really nothing like the TV show, but the show provides a rich framework for what is a hilarious pastiche.
