 MetroActive Stage | Alix Olson
WHEN SPOKEN-WORD POET Alix Olson took the stage at the 1998 National Poetry Slam last summer in Austin, Texas, she had a daunting task ahead of her.

 Rambles: Alix Olson, Independence Meal
Olson is by turns thoughtful, observant, vengeful, passionate and iconoclastic, sometimes spitting out her words so fast the listener is challenged to keep up with her.
Olson has issued a book version of the poems on her first album, Built Like This; one can hope she will do the same for Independence Meal as well.
Although there are times when Olson shouts slogans or hits the obvious hot-button issues, much of the time her poems meander through the different images summoned up by the subject.

Alix Olson's second album of confrontational spoken word poetry will succeed or fail with even the most openminded listeners on the basis of these three questions.
In "Womyn Before", Olson pays tribute to her mother and heroines, while a "hidden" thirteenth track takes a crack at overbearing patriarchs.
At her worst, Olson is self-aggrandizing and self-righteous, but even then, her poetry and the band behind it shine brightly; it's just a little easier to take when you don't think she's angry at you.

Alix has been a poetry slam champion and it is obvious through her vocal delivery that she is a skilled spoken word performer.
The title track, “Independence Meal,” does a better job of underlining Alix’s politically progressive position while simultaneously seducing the listener with her voice, which is alternately husky, sinuous, and forthright.
When Alix turns her eye to feminism, she speaks with a sharp, focused intensity that is both inspiring and sexy.
