Howarth, more at home at fly-half, dictated the opening 20 minutes, adding a second penalty and then waltzing through a paper-thin Vale defence to score a try he converted from close range.
However, the second half was a one-sided affair, with Howarth starting the ball rolling with a penalty and Forster, Paul Young and Peter Buxton crossing for tries.
