Topic: Alizarine ink

  The Household Cyclopedia - Inks
When ink fades, it is from a decomposition of the organic matter; it may be restored by brushing over with infusion of galls or solution of ferrocynnide of potassium.
Alizarine ink may be evaporated to dryness and formed into cakes.
Sympathetic inks are such as do not appear after they are written with, but which may be made to appear at pleasure by certain means to be used for that purpose.

  Ink - LoveToKnow Watches
Ink which yields by means of pressure an impression, on a sheet of damped tissue paper, of characters written in it is called copying ink.
The ink is prepared by mixing the varnish with the pigment, and grinding the mass to impalpable fineness either in a levigating mill or by a stone and muller.
For fl ink, lamp-fl mixed with a little indigo or Prussian blue is the pigment employed; for wood engravings it may be mixed with ivory fl, and for copper plates with ivory or Frankfurt fl; for lithographic reproductions Paris fl is used.

Iron-gall nut ink - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Iron-gall nut ink is a purple-fl ink made from iron salts and tannin from vegetable sources.
It was the standard writing and drawing ink in Europe, from about the 12th century to the 19th century, and remained in use well into the 20th century.
The gradual darkening of the ink was due to the oxidation of the iron ions from ferrous (Fe) to ferric (Fe) state by atmospheric oxygen.

Alizarin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alizarin, or 1,2-dihydroxyanthraquinone or mordant red, is the red dye originally derived from the root of the madder plant.
The alizarin component became the first natural dye to be synthetically duplicated in 1868 when the German chemists Carl Graebe and Carl Liebermann, working for BASF, found a way to produce it from anthracene.
Alizarin red is used in a biochemical assay to determine, quantitatively by colourimetery, the presence of calcific deposition by cells of an osteogenic lineage.

In later improvements the well-known cylinder press was employed; the plate was inked mechanically and cleaned off by passing under a sharp blade of steel; and the cloth, instead of being laid on the plate, was passed round the pressure cylinder.
The mordants are mostly in the form of acetates which are stable in the cold but decompose during the steaming process, and combine as hydroxides with the colours, forming and fixing on the fabric the insoluble lake.
Alizarine reds and pinks are the most complicated of the mordant colours, requiring for their proper production the addition of brightening agents, such as oxalate of tin, oils, tartaric acid, and also acetate of lime.

Forty Centuries of Ink - Chapter XIII
Many other plain inks were exhibited, and their properties described --as gallo-sumach ink, myrabolams ink, Runge's ink, --inks in which the tanno-gallate of iron was kept in solution by nitric, muriatic, sulphuric, and other acids, or by oxalate of potash, chloride of lime, etc.
The author stated that the ink he preferred for his own use was composed of twelve ounces of gall, eight ounces of sulphate of indigo, eight ounces of copperas, a few cloves, and four or six ounces of gum arabic, for a gallon of ink.
The vegetable matter in common inks facilitates the destruction, or rather alteration and precipitation of the indigo, for the dye appears in the iron precipitate and may be extracted from it with boiling water.

alizarine - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about alizarine
Alizarin crystallizes in dark red prisms and sublimes in orange-coloured needles, melting at 290°C/554°F. It is almost insoluble in water, but dissolves in alcohol.
Ferric oxide with alizarin gives a violet-fl compound, chromium oxide a claret, calcium oxide a blue, and aluminium and tin give different shades of red.

All ordinary inks, however, were shown to have certain drawbacks, and the author endeavored to ascertain by experiment whether other dark substances could be added to inks to impart greater durability to writings made with them, and at the same time prevent those chemical changes which were the cause of ordinary inks fading.
The author stated that the ink he preferred for his own use was composed of twelve ounces of gall, eight ounces of sulphate of indigo, eight ounces of copperas, a few cloves, and four or six ounces of gum arabic, for a gallon of ink.

After the ink is exposed to the air, the iron-gall compound develops to an intensely fl and permanent color, entirely superseding the original blue which ultimately fades away.
All inks, however, the basis of which is not tannate and gallate of iron, are not fl immediately, and consequently not so agreeable to the eye when using them.
The alizarine or rather indigo inks have a greenish, the chromium inks a reddish hue, and are not better adapted to withstand chemical agents than iron inks are.

 Heat-sensitive color transfer ribbon - Patent 4572684
A heat transfer ribbon or carbon paper having a layer of a heat-transfer ink composition on a foundation is usually employed as a recording medium in a thermal printer and thermal facsimile, and various improvements of the ribbon and carbon paper, e.g.
Upon the formation of heat-sensitive transfer ink layers, for instance, respective heat-sensitive transfer ink compositions may be applied to the foundation 8 to form the transfer ink layers 9, 10, 11 and 12 in stripes in the longitudinal direction of the foundation 8 as shown in FIGS.
Since the amounts of the ink layers transferred can be controlled by changing the intensity of the pulse signal given to the thermal head of a printer, it is possible to obtain middle tone and accordingly to reproduce a color image faithful to the color tone of an original.

Most vegetable dyes are now superseded by artificial dyes, as aniline, alizarine, and other products of coal tar, etc., but certain kinds are still of some commercial importance and are generally considered more permanent than the latter.
Vegetable dye stuffs owe their origin to the presence of small quantities of certain chemical substances secreted in the plant tissues which are extracted by processes of fermentation, boiling, or chemical treatment.
The heart wood as well as the roots are exported for the extraction of a valuable fast dye (violet, dark blue, or purple), which is used in the manufacture of ink and in dyeing woollen and silk goods, and for numerous other purposes.
