Topic: Alkoxy

In the News (Wed 15 Feb 12)

  OhioLINK ETD: Gopalakrishnan, Sandhya
Alkoxy radicals were produced in a supersonic free-jet expansion and probed via laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy.
The diagnostics for the alkoxy radicals was further extended by studies aimed at obtaining their molecular structure.
A few bands in the vibrationally resolved spectra of the primary alkoxy radicals, 1-propoxy, 1-butoxy, and 1-pentoxy were studied under high resolution to resolve the rotational structure.

 Access Story: Modeling Molecular Fate
Another first-generation alkoxy radical with different connectivity formed during the degradation of isoprene.
To determine which reactions are most likely, the team used the HP Superdome cluster to three-dimensionally model the isoprene and the energy of the transition state for each reaction.
For each individual reaction of each first- and second-generation of alkoxy radicals, Dibble's team must determine the energy barrier of the transition state (or the ruggedness of the mountain pass).

Diazomethane cycloadditions to gamma-alkoxy-alpha,beta-unsaturated esters: a violation of the inside alkoxy theory?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
For this reason, we decided to study their behaviour towards diazomethane, and we wish to report that these reactions are not only completely regioselective (as already known in the literature; refs 2,3, but are often highly diastereoselective as well.
The terminal atoms on the diazomethane moiety in the transition structure for the cycloaddition reaction are not strongly charged.
The correlation between the amount of negative charge on the 1,3-dipole and the reaction stereoselectivity was demonstrated by previous studies.

Alkoxy radicals from isoprene: Reaction Pathways   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The yields of these species are determined by the site of OH addition to isoprene and the fate of the alkoxy radicals; the latter topic is our focus.
The OH-initiated degradation of isoprene in the atmosphere is expected to produce four
Intramolecular hydrogen bonding, double H-atom transfer, and prompt chemistry of peroxy and alkoxy radicals from isoprene.

G1. Unimolecular Reactions of Alkoxy Radicals: Experiment and Theory
Because of their role as key intermediates in the degradation of VOCs reactions of alkoxy radicals have been subject of many recent investigations.
The theoretical work has also addressed two further questions which arise in the investigation of the decomposition reactions of halogenated alkoxy radicals: a) the importance of chemical activation, and b) the possibility of halogen elimination from the ?-carbon atom (in the case of C
Therefore, the thermal and chemically activated decomposition of CF O (Y=F,H) radicals has been investigated [5] and prompt decomposition yields have been derived by an approximate theoretical treatment for the C-C-bond cleavage of activated CF CFHO radicals, as they originate from the exothermic reaction of the corresponding peroxy-radical with NO in the troposphere.

Atmospheric Fate of Unsubstituted Alkoxy and Carbonyl Radicals
Abstract: Introduction Alkoxy (R 1 C(R 2)(R 3)O.) and Carbonyl (RC(.)O) radicals are important intermediates in the degradation chain of hydrocarbons.
Both classes of radicals are subject to competing reaction chan-nels leading to different products which exhibit different ozone formation potentials: Alkoxy radicals - (1) Reaction with O 2 (k O2, => aldehyde/ketone + HO 2); (2) thermal decomposition (k dis, => aldehyde/ketone + alkyl/H); (3) isomerization (k iso, => hydroxyaldehyde/hydroxyketone)....

Preparation of 2-Alkoxy-5-methoxybenzaldehydes and 2-Ethoxy-5-alkoxybenzaldehydes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Considering the possible transformation of bromo to alkoxy or hydroxy group, 2-ethoxy-5-bromobenzaldehyde (3) was used as a starting material to prepare unsymmetrical 2,5-dialkoxybenzaldehydes.
Although phenyl tert-butyl ether was reported to be obtained in 42-46% yield by the reaction of bromobenzene and potassium tert-butoxide, [7].
In 1969, Bacon et al., reported the conversion of halogen to alkoxy groups by the reaction of aryl halides with sodium alkoxides, using copper(I) salts as catalysts [8].

for these processes are not well known even for the alkoxy radicals derived from alkanes.
LIF has been used with great success to monitor the abundance of small alkoxy radicals in kinetics studies, and the absence of LIF spectra of large alkoxy radicals has impeded studies of their reaction kinetics.
We would like to use LIF to study the chemistry of large alkoxy radicals.

HYDROXY- AND ALKOXY-SUBSTITUTED BENZYL DERIVATIVES (JECFA Food Additives Series 48)
The structural feature common to all members of the group is a primary oxygenated functional group bound directly to a benzene ring.
Twenty-nine of the 46 members of this group of flavouring agents have been reported to occur naturally in food.
In general, hydroxy- and alkoxy- derivatives of benzaldehyde and benzyl alcohol are oxidized to the corresponding benzoic acid derivatives and, to a lesser extent, reduced to the corresponding benzyl alcohol derivatives.
